'Revenge of the Nerds' Remake in the Works 298

grouchomarxist writes "According to CNN the movie 'Revenge of the Nerds' is being remade. Here is the IMDB entry for the remake." I just don't see how this could be good. Unless they let me play Goose ;)

    A modern twist on a timeless classic.
  • Part 1 was classic. Part 2 was average, but definately had some great lines ("What if... C-A-T really spelled 'Dog?'"). Parts 3 and 4 were utter garbage. I'm glad there's potential to continue this series.

      The funniest thing is what he's doing now. Apparently, he fell in with some tavern owner in Chicago and is now adding his likeness to a microbrew called "Todd's Beer" -- creative, eh? Here's the website [toddsbeer.com]

      I went shopping for some beer one day at a local liquor store [binnys.com], and there was this bus parked in front. I thought nothing of it, so I went inside. When I went inside, I was instantly accosted by his handlers and shuffled over to a table where he was sitting down signing six packs. I got a meaty "HOWYA DOIN BROTHER?!?!" handshake from him, and a signed six.

      He called me a nerd. I laughed. I still have the six pack holder tacked to my wall.
  • I will smash a bunch of glass vases against the outside of the theater, then I'll go in and watch until the song comes on, when I'll bore a hole in the top inside of the theater and jump out of it onto the glass, thereby saving myself from the pain of ever hearing that song again!

  • Perhaps H-Wood wouldn't be in such a dire financial situation if they came up with something NEW rather than just rehashing the same OLD unoriginal crap. Maybe they could earn a few billion extra dollars? Better make sure they DRM all the media that they distribute that movie on too to make sure all of the thieves out there don't "steal" their crap!

      Rehashing an old idea is not necessarily bad. Reusing as story isn't necessarily bad. We did it for centuries before the advent of motion pictures, and it's led to some pretty brilliant movies since then when Shakespeare is the source of the rehashed ideas.

      The best version of "Richard III" that I've ever seen was a 1995 movie that placed it in a 1930s fascist England. "West Side Story" is a street gang musical based on Romeo and Juliet that is widely held in great esteem (unlike the movie "Romeo + Juliet
      • The literature courses in took in college essentially posited that there's nothing new since Odysseus, the Old Testament, the Satyricon, and Shakespeare's body of work.

        Everything is is a rehash of the fundamental elemenents.

        Now, you can inject a boatload of creativity and trawl the depths of human emotion with skilled use of these known devices, but that's not an excuse to turn the vapid xeroxing monkey machines loose on the already limp plots of the past three decades.

        Don't forget "The Magnificent Seven", which was a thinly disguised remake of "The Seven Samurai". Both films were brilliant.
    • ...There's a bug in their hash() and rehash() functions. But because they have no idea what the output should be, they're stress-testing them until they crash.
  • How can they do this? We all know that Goose died after college. In fact, he died again a few years later after being reincarnated as Dr. Greene.

    What will they come up with next? A remake of The Posiden Adventure? A remake of The Hidden Fortress?

    They're always great. I suppose it's easier than writing something new. There's bound to be some sort of hollywood remake backlash coming soon... I hope.

    To paraphrase The Filthy Critic -- http://www.bigempire.com/filthy [bigempire.com] -- apparently the grassfuckers in Hollywood have humped the 70's dry and there's nothing left to remake, so now they want to ass rape the pop classics of the 80's as well.

    I still can't belive they are remaking Superman.

    • Actually, from what I've heard about it, Superman Returns [imdb.com] is basically continuing the story of the movies from the 80's.
    • They haven't humped the 70's dry yet. We got our "Poseidon Adventure" remake, but what about a new "Towering Inferno?" Imagine the box office draw if OJ were to reprise his role.

      And no 70's dry-humping would be complete without a remake of "Jaws."
      • We didn't get a Poseidon remake — we got a second remake [imdb.com] less than a year after the first remake [imdb.com]. Isn't that illegal?

        What's desperately needed now is an equivalent (not a remake, please!) of Airplane! Aside from being so funny it was dangerous to watch without an asthma inhaler, Airplane! thorough skewered the 70s fad for disaster movies. Which probably had a lot to do with there not being a sequel to the The Swarm, a second sequel to Poseidon Adventure, or a fourth sequel to Airport. For that last

          Actually, Airplane! was a remake of a movie called Zero Hour. Some of the scenes, some of the dialog even were lifted straight from the original movie. In fact the people who made Airplane! bought the rights to Zero Hour. So technically Airplane! is a remake.
          • Literally, yes Airplane! is a remake of Zero Hour. (I find it particularly amusing that the famous line, "... somebody who can not only fly this plane, but didn't have fish for dinner!" was lifted unchanged out of Zero Hour.) But legally, no. Despite what it says in IMDB, Zero Hour does not appear in the credits for Airplane! — the studio lawyers vetoed it for some reason. So officially, Airplane! is an original movie, despite its origins.

            In any case. that's one more reason not to remake Airplane!.

            Airplane! is a spoof of several plane based disaster movies. It used Zero Hour [imdb.com] as base material, kinda like Kentucky Fried Movie used Enter the Dragon as base material for A Fistful of Yen and blaxploitation movies like Cleopatra Jones [imdb.com] as base material for the Cleopatra Schwartz segment. Both segments spoof other movies of the genre (and other genres), as well, but have one particular movie as the basis. I imagine the producers of Airplane! bought the rights to Zero Hour to use character names and some dialogs. I vaguely recall seeing Zero Hour a long time ago (I think on TV), but don't remember it being intentionally funny. I also vaguely recall the Airport movies (75, 77, the concorde one [80?] - haven't seen them since they were on TV).

    On a serious note, Curtis "Booger" Armstrong does fine voiceover work on Stroker & Hoop.

    0Things are looking bleak.. can we just avoid the remakes ? Seems that the industry is in the same pit that the musc industry was in, during the late eighties. Rehashing all the old crap from the 60's. Untill Cobaine came along and shook things up a bit. Maybe the Worchowski(sp? for the nazis) wil be our Nirvana of film? Id rather watch a remake of DeepThroat then this. We all know how it ends anyway.

  • I loved the original "Revenge of the Nerds" (which was filmed in my hometown) and I can't see why... just why would they want to do this. Especially in this day and age where the geeks are the ones making the big bucks and running the companies that are in the news. It's "cool" to be a geek now, unlike in 1983.

    • Minor quibble: There is a difference between nerds and geeks. Nerds are the smart ones like most of the characters in RotN, except maybe Booger. Real geeks are just plain awkward and often (in my experience) not particularly bright (think Napoleon Dynamite). I don't think it will ever be cool to be a geek. But I think nerddom has gained some respect. Although I suspect that your average junior high nerd would beg to differ...

  • The original was filmed on the University of Arizona campus (the A logo subverted into the team letter for the "Atoms" instead). It was released just a year before I went there so it was fun to location-spot. Wonder where the new one will be filmed?
    • Somewhere where it's still legal to have an official university-sanctioned event where each contestant has to chug a beer after each lap of the tricycle race around the track? (Remember, it was the very-easy-to-synthesize trichloromethylene that negated the effects of alcohol).

  • It's bad enough that a component of the "revenge" of the nerds was to demonstrate that they could do as many substances and be as callously promiscuous as the "jocks", but now they have to do a remake of it? The original had enough else going for it that I could look past that negative dimension, which was not the main idea.

    Meh. The best revenge is living well, and I'm doing that now. This flick sounds like a "must miss". Isn't anybody coming up with an original idea in Hollywood these days? They jus

    • Because remaking something that doesn't have existing emotional connections won't be profitable. Don't you know that's how the movie biz works now? They're trying to screw up all their old classics so everyone hates ALL incarnations of them. New ideas are risky and scary. And all movies have to have huge budgets. Didn't you know that?
    • Isn't anybody coming up with an original idea in Hollywood these days? They just remade The Poseiden Adventure for cyrin' out loud.

      Betcha they won't make a new version of Irwin Allen's other big disaster film, The Towering Inferno (or, as Mad Magazine put it, The Towering Sterno).

      Oh, wait, Oliver Stone is doing World Trade Center. Never mind.

  • Having recently seen Bewitched, I'm half-expecting a Revenge of the Nerds remake wherein the nerds decide to make their own movie: a Revenge of the Nerds remake! I believe this sad, blatantly derivative state of affairs is exemplary of what they call "postmodernism".

    Memo to Hollywood: You got your Revenge of the Nerds remake already. It was called Napoleon Dynamite and it was more awesome than all of the trite remakes of the present century by at least an order of magnitude or two.
    • I was going to dust off my soapbox and pick on you for using "postmodern", but yeah, you're pretty much dead-on with that one in a very literal interpretation of the self-awareness nascent in post-modernism.

    When I went with my roommates to see Revenge of the Sith in the theater, they showed a trailer for the Spielberg remake of "War of the Worlds". I launched into my typical rant, asking one of my roommates a rhetorical question: "why does the movie industry have to keep making remakes of everything? Why can't they make movies based off of original ideas?"

    The following trailer was for the movie "Stealth". We laughed and shook our heads at the absurdity of it, and when it finished my roommate said (in reply to my previous questions): "that's why."

    I look at it as just the opposite. I was a geek in grade school. Big time. My friends and I all got picked on, teased, harassed, and abused. It wasn't until we got into high school where we realised there were a bunch of people getting picked on, and that we could work together to over come the bullying. When someone was harassed in high school, we would stick up for them. It's a lot harder for a bully to pick on a geek if they are surrounded by 4 other geeks. Comba

    In the 1980's we had:

    The Japanese "Engrish" Speaker who took lots of photos
    The token minority-minority double-whammy, the black gay
    The other token black stereotype: the thug
    The cheerleader slut (do those exist anymore?)
    The preppy boytoy BMOC (do those exist either??)
    Pot smoking as rebellion (is that still true?)

    The original was, well, not even that original a concept. "Bunch of misfits get even with the popular/athletic guys by outsmarting them". If I had a nickel...

    In real life, if a bunch of nerds outmaneuvered th jocks, they wouldn't get a standing ovation from the crowd. They'd get a blanket party [wikipedia.org] instead.

  • ...a Slashdot contest to pick somebody for a cameo role in the movie? It would be the ultimate marketing tie-in... Except that most of us probably wouldn't pay money to see a remake of Revenge of the Nerds.
  • No matter any upgrades this film may experience over the original, there is definitely one scene that will *not* make the cut: We've got bush! Imagine full frontal female nudity in any non x-rated film these days...
  • The "Nerds" movies lived (ok, survived in the latter parts) on the nerds being the "outcasts", the "weirdos", the smart ones who outwit the stronger and more "successful" (not necessarily with their grades, but with their college life) football jocks.

    Today, nerds ain't the underdogs anymore. We're no longer "uncool". RPGs have gone mainstream. So has the computer. And many other geek/nerd toys and pastimes.

    So how could you capture the feeling of the 80s with a remake?
