The Telephreak Project is Awesome

I have to say, I've used a Telephreak.org voice mailbox for about a year now. It's a lifesaver. The guys over there have an awesome way of doing things. I've met the crew online (irc.telephreak.org), and (as you may or may not be able to tell), they're pretty awesome. I'm a huge Telephreak fan. Glad to hear they're up to more cool stuff :)

Ok it's a PBX, I know that much

The docs etc. mention VoIP but what software clients, if any, can one use on a PC to talk to people behing the PBX - is that even part of it?

I work in a satellite office and am interested in adding some sort of VoIP to our set-up but it's not my area of expertise.

Is Asterisk the sort of solution I should be looking at or am I barking up the wrong telegraph pole?

There are any number of SIP softphones, but I recommend using a softphone using asterisk's native IAX protocol. Check out the iaxcomm softphone for win32, linux and OSX: iaxclient.sourceforge.net/iaxcomm/index.html

Yea, I'm just as lost. Can you use Asterisk as a real PBX?... PSTN/POTS Asterisk Real telephone? VOIP Asterisk Real telephone? Can I hookup real phones to this thing?

Yes. Asterisk is a real, and very powerful open source PBX. With the requisite hardware you can hookup real phones, or use soft phones over SIP or IAX protocols, or use real TCP/IP phones (again SIP or IAX protocols), or hookup to a phoneline, or hookup to a VOIP number termination....

Is it too hard to use the acronym PBX in the slashdot story? I'm tired of stories where either you have to visit the links, or already have an interest in the item in question (at which point, by the time it gets to Slashdot you've probably heard of the news item already.)

While I agree to some respect, I didn't even notice the article didn't mention PBX -- I see Asterisk and just think PBX.
