Coffee Flavored Breakfast Cereal 299

Musrum writes "Hubbards, the New Zealand based makers of fine breakfast cereals, have launched 'Cafe au Lait', which they describe as "light coffee flavored flakes". This is great, just the thing for Xmas morning, wonderful coffee flavour, not too sweet. What took them so long? The packaging meets all known requirements for political correctness. Brain Health Warning: Do NOT read the enclosed 'Clipboard' newsletter unless you are inured against extreme examples of twee-ness."

ok my grandfather used to be a coffee farmer in jamaica so i'm an expert.

The ultimate cup of coffee recipe

Blend a nice dark Roast like Yuban with the light flavor of something like Folgers or my favorite Jamaican blue mountain.

use two filters as the slower straining process allows more flavor.

use one very very big heaping spoon for each cup.

remove the glass thingy (carraffe) and allow the coffee brew to almost fill the part of the coffee machine with the coffee grounds.

Take your mug and put it in place of the carraffe and let the liquid mana fil your cup.

add a pinch of salt, then sweeten to your preference.

put the carraffe back so everyone else can enjoy.
        • did you just compare jamaican blue mountain with folgers? yikes!
        • folgers?! yuban?! i so hope you're kidding. those "coffees" are not roasted long enough to full exfoliate the beans. Not to mention the sit on a shelf next to forever before they get to your kitchen. as for your method: paper filters remove the oils from the bean before it ever makes it to your cup. bad. also, exposing the beans to the coffee for a longer time is bad. the best way to extract the flavor is to use HOT water and pressre to quickly push the water through the beans. that way, you get the fl
        • Most blue mountain coffee has just enough jamaican coffee that they can get away with labelling it blue mountain. It's the same way with 'Kona' coffee.

Do you know where to get the genuine article? Outside of a roundtrip ticket to jamaica?

Anyone that would consider Yuban or Folgers as the ingredients for an ultimte cup of coffee has yet to have a good brew :) Now, I could go on about how you need to spend huge dollars getting the best beans and gear, and sound like the idiots that buy Monster Cable. However, it isn't about what you spend; you just need to be careful about your selections. For the same price as a what you find in most folks' kitchens, you can truly experience amazing coffee.

To get the ultimate cup, start with some good beans. Here's an outfit that has good prices and pretty decent beans. [portorico.com] You'll see that good coffee doesn't have to be expensive - the Costa Rican varietals are excellent and $5.99/pound. You can also get great coffees at Trader Joe's if there's one near you, or even order pretty decent beans from Dunkin' Donuts.

Both Porto Rico and Trader Joe's offer Kona and Jamaican Blue Mountain that is 100% - none of this crap of adding 2% to crap coffee and calling it what it is not. It is up to individual taste whether it is worth the money for rare coffees - I like them, but I like the more pedestrian beans, too. And they cost about the same as a can of Yuban or Folgers.

Now, notice that I said BEANS. Coffee that is ground goes stale in hours. Don't let anyone tell you different. Don't use beans, don't drink good coffee.

Next, you need a good grinder. The king of home grinders is the Jericho - nearly impossible to find online or off, and they cost up to $200 (couldn't even find picture online). I have one, and it is the greatest present I ever got. However, a decent burr grinder, like this one [zyworld.com], can be had for as little as $30, and is the easiest, best way to grind your coffee - just set it, hit the button, and come back 15 seconds later. It'll do the job, even if it won't last as long as the Jericho (mine has been purring away, twice a day, for 7 years, just like new).

A good drip maker can make good coffee, but the best way is to use the vacuum method. Vacuum pots are typically expensive, hard to clean, and difficult to use - like the Cona [sweetmarias.com], the best. However, Bodum has a line of automatic pots that are a snap all the way around. The Mini Santos [bodumusa.com] is about $60, and it makes terrific coffee at the push of a button - add grounds, water, done. They look kind of cool, too, in an old iMac kind of way.

I guarantee that if you make a modest investment in time and money, you'll be having coffee that any snob would be very happy to drink.

          Jonathan

        • use one very very big heaping spoon for each cup.

Sorry, but I've always meant to ask: what is a 'heaping spoon'? It sounds like something you might use to rearrange compost or scrap...

OTOH, if it's what we here call a heaped spoon(ful), then do you use it when making a packing lunch? Maybe with some boiling egg and chopping liver sandwiches, washed down with some nice icing tea? Or maybe a toasting sandwich topped with grating cheese?

(Or maybe I'd be better off in a padding cell...)

Coffee-flavored cereal might taste interesting to people who like coffee. How about smokers?

You don't quite understand how much your stuff can be permeated by smoke while living with a smoker until you move in with someone who has never smoked. My mom was a heaver smoker, and I lived with her through college. Now on my own, I moved in with a friend who happened to come from a smoke-free household. I brought a bunch of my stuff with me, including a bucket of Kellogg's Corn Flakes. One morning, my friend sniffed around and asked, "What are those? Nicotine flakes?!?"

Wow, I took another bite and gave it a good taste, and sure enough, I understood what he smelled. Living with a smoker for so long, you just get used to it.

I then had a wonderfully evil thought... what if the tobacco companies latched onto the concept of nicotine flakes?

Marlboro Flakes - curiously addictive cereal.
