World Trade Towers and Pentagon Attacked 1215

The World Trade Towers in new york were crashed into by 2 planes, one on each tower, 18 minutes apart. Nobody really knows who did it, but the planes were big ones. Normally I wouldn't consider posting this on Slashdot, but I'm making an exception this time because I can't get news through any of the conventional websites, and I assume I'm not alone. Update We're having server problems. Sorry. Updated info, both towers havecollapsed, pentagon hit by 3rd plane. Part of it has collapsed.

Yahoo has an article [yahoo.com] but right now it's only about 1 sentence long and just says that a plane hit the world trade center. I'm sure they'll post some good links though. I can't get to any of the other sites, all too busy.

An unconfirmed report from a anonymous American Airlines employee said a AA plane was involved, possibly hijacked. Why do terrorists seem to go after the World Trade Center, anyways?

Realize that not everyone has access to a TV right now, and EVERY MAJOR NEWS WEBSITE IS UNREACHABLE for this story at the moment. OK - it's not NERDY NEWS, but news for nerds all the same. SOME people have SOME interest in things that happen outside their cubicle.

It could just be the sheer amount of people clicking in in shock - but there have been news stories in the past without the news sites going down.

Is there cyber attack being run together with the terrorist one?

was an American Airlines 767 from Boston.
My guess (at 9:33am EDT) is that both planes were hijacked.

Why do terrorists seem to go after the World Trade Center, anyways?

Because terrorists are primitive and think in a sort of 19th-century way about "symbols" and the like. To them, the World Trade Center is the symbol of America's economic success, and they think that Americans will be devastated if it is successfully attacked.

The truth is, if anything, it shows how limited and weak the terrorists really are - their one and only target has been standing there for decades and they've just finally figured out how to seriously damage it.

If they had managed to simultaneously do the same thing in multiple cities, one might be impressed at their capabilities - as it stands, woop-de-do, they can hijack two planes at the same time.

America doesn't have anything real to worry about, not that it shouldn't go after the perpetrators with everything it's got.

    They are available live on

As an interesting aside, days like this are something that our NSA and CIA are here to prevent. They monitor communications traffic (SIGINT) and attempt to forcast terrorist like events. My question is:

How many slashdotters will rethink their views on the necessity of CIA and NSA covert SIGINT after today's tragedy?

I don't think it's right for people to invade my privacy, this is a tragedy but it's no excuse to let the government read my private info.

These people have not left Bush much of a choice. At this point, the only question is "Can the CIA/NSA track the attackers and supply enough data to nuke their leader?"

An attack this large is going to leave a ton of evidence to be analyzed. Getting away with a crime is inversely proportional to the number of people involved. The very size and nature of this attack eliminates most of the sane/reasonable world as suspects.

Having no reasonable options, Bush is not in a position to do anything other than hunt down the loonies and administer radiation therapy.

Perhaps Bush's real test will come in the form of unrelated international challenges, where the confusion of this attack is used a diversion. If China wanted to invade Taiwan, they won't get a better opportunity than this.

I'm listening to National Public Radio. The host of Morning Edition, Bob Edwards, just interviewed Dr. Alice Cronin professor of Counter-Terrorism at Georgetown University. She said (I'm paraphrasing),

"We have liberties in the US that we cherish, but there may need to be some trade-offs of those for greater security. And those trade-offs will be on the table."

Look for those in government who always seek an opportunity to restrict civil liberties to attempt to use this as a pretext for that.

We have to be ready to counter that immediately!

I have watched enough implosions on TV to know that this was A CLASSIC IMPLOSION!

THE BOMBS HAD TO BE INSIDE THE BUILDINGS... IT LOOKED LIKE THE WERE DESTROYED FLOOR BY FLOOR.

The Planes were just to say "LOOK AT US!" and to divert emergency personnel to the area.

The Bombs went off after so as to maximize the damge to government agencies responding to the area.

This was very coordinated and very expensive... getting that much explosives inside the building was very expensive.

Of course this is all purely speculation... but as I said... IT LOOKS LIKE A CLASSIC IMPLOSION.

Talking with a Pearl survivor about these acts of terrorism I got the comment that this was worse than Pearl. At least there the targets were military. Here they majority of the deaths are civilian. Hope we (US Gov't) has the cohones to adequately retaliate, make it obvious that terrorism against us is just to damn expensive to try again. Suspect that we won't and as a result will suffer repeated terroristic acts in the future.

I suggest that you get some of your friends together and try throwing rocks at the local cops. Let me know how it goes.

The Arab nations attacked Israel numerous times intent on total genocide, vowing to 'push the Jews into the sea'. They acted, then, in a unified fashion claiming that 'all arab nations were one'(panarabism). Against all odds they lost, no American aid involved. Then the Arabs couldn't give a shit about the palestinians. Sure, the nations like to complain, but has Syria allowed the Palestinians to move into Syria since all Arab nations are one? Prior to the creation of Israel, there was no such thing as 'Palestine'. What hypocracy. Palestine was what the Romans tried to rename Israel when they wated to destroy it. The Arabs got 99% of the land in the Middle East. Israel got 1%. And apparently this was too much for the Arabs.

Israel tries to keep Palestinians from settling near Israeli millitary establishments because it would pose a national security risk. They can't get permits in those areas (so it's very difficult for palestianians to get building permits anywhere, since Israel is such a small place- the size of New Jersy, for god's sake.). They build anyway, and then get pissed off when the buildings are bulldozed.

    Keep these things in mind;

    1. It's easy to judge others, but name one nation in all of history that has had its very existance continually threatened for over 50 years and maintained such a high degree of personal liberty. An arab Israeli citizen still has more freedom than a Palestinian, an Iraqui, a Syrian etc.

    2. While Arafat claims to have given up on the destruction of Israel he gave as a condition of 'peace' what he calls the 'Palestinian right of return'. Any Palestinian who wanted to could become an Israeli citizen. Israel, unlike it's neighibors, is a democracy and would not survive intact. No nation should be forced to submit to its own destruction.

    3. If you think Syria or Iraq is better than Israel you should seriously go live there. If you're feeling really frisky, try telling your neighibor about your religious beliefs if you have any. Find out what the government thinks of that kind of behavior. Iraqui and Palestinian broadcasting stations make up facts wholesale to support the government's chosen political beliefs. Oh yeah, they don't even bother to rebroadcast the BBC.

    4. A person watching WWII late in the game might have had difficulty telling the Americans from the Germans. They may have pointed out that there were concentration camps in both nations. Reading history, it becomes clear who the agressors were. Israel made huge concesions during the peace process. What have they gotten to date? More bombings. The only thing that has prevented the wholesale slaughter of all Israelis has been the use of force in self defense. In that situation, I'd make the same choices that the Israelis have.

Anyone can make an omelet with eggs. The trick is to make one with none.
