H0ek's Journal: 1,700,000,000 digits of pi

It's been a lifelong dream that I've finally realized. Now I feel like sharing it with you. Here is the bittorrent for the iso image of a CD that contains 1.7 billion digits of pi. It also contains a few Cygwin tools to make DOS navigation easier for you that are not converted to the True and Living OS, yet. I have also generated SHA1 and MD5 sums for your verification needs.

Now we see the depths of my geek depravity.

What sort of computation time did that need?

Oh, only a couple of day... ...for a supercomputer in Japan. They're nice enough to share wit hthe world the first 4.2 billion digits of their 1.2 trillion digit record. I just downloaded the files, "uncompressed" them (they've cut the size in half simply by having each file byte contain two digits), concatenated them together into a nice long file and bzipped that file down to a size tha fits onto a disk.

Oh, yeah, then I had to write a search program that would display the position of a string of digits
