Journal FortKnox's Journal: Bits and Pieces 22

Just some random stuff that's going on.

This Weekend: Didn't have a chance to make pasta, but I did manage to get a lot of yardwork done. We scored some living room furniture from a friend of my parents, and we had a road-wide yardsale on Saturday. Didn't have a chance to really turn over my garden, and its so riddled with stone and tree roots that I won't have time to turn it over and plant in enough time. So my wife bought me a windowbox to plant herbs in it for this year. A good compromise.

Thief 3: I sold enough of my stuff to score the $40 to buy Thief 3... but my wife saw a deal in the garage sale... A perfectly worked 21" Trinitron monitor... $45. I talked'm down to $40, and voila... Went from 15" to 21" just like that. Which means I'll have to d/l the Thief3 demo, and buy it later (however, it just dropped to $35, so I may be able to trade in some games to get it cheap at EB).

Pen & Paper RPGs: I really have been itchin to play a pen&paper RPG (b-o... what ever happened to paranoia??), but, unfortunately, the only friend I know the RPs already has like 5 games he's playing... I could probably do one game a month on a saturday afternoon. I could rope in some noobs and get a game going, and I've been told I'm a good DM... problem is, though, I prefer to play.

Ronnie: True, I was just a kid when Ronnie was pres, but I learned a lot about him in College when I had to take my polysci courses. I really liked him (or how history remembered him), but it looks like the /. JE circle either loves him, or hates him (to use GMontag's words... if you hate'm, your a buncha commie cheerleaders).

So I'm outta that funk I was in, and I'll be hooking my bad-boy monitor up tonight. I can't wait to have a better resolution than 1024X768!!

Theif 3 looks pretty darned awesome.

But I'm saving up for Halo 2 -- yummy! That looks simply too good, and the co-op mode seems to have features where you can trade your weapons and the like.

On the other hand, I'm thinking I should *maybe* just got out a little more and get a real life ;)
    • The problem with Thief 3 is a really rediculous video card requirement. I have a GeForce2... and it won't work with T3. Not as in I need to set it for low res, or it's slow... It won't work. Period.

I really wanted to play it, too...

      • This will be the case with almost any game made in the past year. The reason is the hardware requirements for DX9 implementations. If you don't have a hardware DX9 card, then your system will fall to its knees when all the extra texture and lighting effects have to swap up to the CPU instead of staying on the card.

Simple answer. Come to Albany for my Sunday night game. I'd be glad to fit you in. :)

    • The answer to "People say I'm a good DM, but I prefer to play" is what my group does. We have two campaigns (and 2 DMs), generally different gaming systems entirely. We spend a few weeks on our D&D (2nd Ed.) campaign with our one DM, and then switch over to either Arcana Unearthed (d20 or 3.5 Ed D&D rules) or Deadlands (neat game play, poker chips, cards for initative and spell casting. Combat is insane though.) One DM gets to a stopping point in their story, we switch, gives them a chance to pl
  • I've got the Paranoia thing planned, but I got caught up with other stuff, so I never finished the character generator I was working on.

I'll post a JE on it to gauge interest again.
  • Busy with work and upcoming move and life and things weren't falling together smoothly. That's what. Oh and no one nagged me about it so it kinda dropped off my radar.

If there's still interest, I'll see about actually starting it up when I get back home later this week.
  • I am working on getting some balcony railing hangers so I can have some herbs. I do enough cooking that having fresh oregano or thyme would be pretty dang cool.

The problem is that getting the fresh stuff at Albertson's is pretty cheap. I'll have to consider the added cost in time for maintanance and care of more plants. The stuff from Albertson's is in plastic boxes but is not dried and probably under a week since being picked.

The Red gun went out when playing multiplayer Diablo at a friend's house... That sucked. I didn't realize how much red was in the game until it all turned black!
  • How about online paper and pen gaming?? Seriously, a few friends of mine have started a really cool site, and also have some gaming going on. They are looking for more "members".

Let me know if you want contact info or are interested, I may be able to get in on a game later this summer. It is a really cool way to game (of course, written in ASP.NET).

It is easier to write an incorrect program than understand a correct one.
