Geeze Loise...It's humor, son. A joke.
You seem to have forgotten that the conservative 12th commandment is "thou shalt not have a sense of humor". They don't tell jokes, ever. Case in point; look at Dennis Miller'. He became a hard core conservative after 9/11 and consequently forgot how to actually craft a joke.
Hence this bit that smitty linked to was not a joke. At least, it was not written to be one. While it does make a joke of the people who take it seriously it is not actually intended to be funny on its own.

Colbert is topical. Conservative attempts keep repeating tired out inaccurate stereotypes from the 70s (and earlier). If Colbert was still pretending that current conservatives are cut from the same cloth as Nixon he wouldn't have a fan base.

Colbert also has that pompus ass O'Reilly to key off of.
The act and the character are based on O'Reilly. But the material comes from the news. O'Reilly himself doesn't provide anywhere near enough material to keep the show afloat on his own. It's kinda like when conservatives keep repeating the same silly jokes about Obama ad nauseum, it gets old and just makes them look silly instead of actually making people laugh.
