  • I just hooked up a new powerbook 17" and I must say this is the finest machine I have ever owned. Of course, I'm not much of a gamer (outside of my ps2) so this machine is mostly for web/email/coding (java/php/perl) and design work (quark, pshop, illustrator) and some audio work (pro tools)

Its a beast of a machine, fast, slim, amazing display... plus having the superdrive (dvd-r/cd-r) is nice too.

I also like OS X, damn fine OS. I had been using linux for many years, and was thinking of making this machine
  • Toshiba SatellitePro.

That is all you need to know.

And I know that if I stopped at that first line the stupid, retarded, moronic lameness filter would not let me post, so I will ramble amlessly for a while before I submit.

Don't like it? E-mail Taco and don't bother me. I did not write this system, I only abuse it!

  • I'm posting this on an e-racks "lapdog" (dual boot, linux & freebsd), which I have been very happy with. I went laptop shopping for my last birthday (my wife let me / insisted that I pick out my own present), and they were the only place that I could find the features I wanted within the budget. I called them up to ask about customization, and they were very nice / helpful / knowledgable. Since then I've bought four more for people at work, and they've all been great.

I must admit it's nice to have

  • honestly, will it be more school work or more gaming? how serious will the gaming be? if the machine can handle newer games (even games a couple years old), it can handle school work without a problem. if it's just casual gaming of stand-by classics (counter-strike, quake3, etc.) any decent lappy will probably do.

if gaming matters a LOT, the phrase "mobility 9600" should be one to look for.

if the games your friend wants to play are blizzard games and unreal tournament 2003, he could even go mac. fewer
