In other words, he thinks that Pope Benedict failed to teach the real meaning of the red shoes (in solidarity with martyrs) and that the symbol doesn't mean very much any more.

I thought China was currently in contraceptive and gender-selective abortion mode. I don't understand your idea.
But here's mine, in a nutshell: many forms of contraception are misogyny inspired. Men want sex without the complication of children, and are willing to do just about anything to a woman's body, up to and including poisoning her, to get it.
This is a form of violence that is every bit as unacceptable as war or the death penalty or abortion.
