Journal Sturm's Journal: Funny Is Usually Not

Damnit! A new SCO story was posted about 5 minutes ago, and already, the first 6 post are modded +5 Funny. I think somebody is wasting moderator points. If Slashdot readers were so funny, they wouldn't be geeks... They would be comedians.
This is just ridiculous. When I first started reading Slashdot, it was a great place to have a discussion about IT news. However, it's slowly but surely turned into the proverbial peanut gallery.
Maybe mod points should only be given to "old" geeks like me who have no sense of humor. Or maybe, us old geeks should have a mechanism for ignoring comments marked as Funny. I think the last thing Slashdot needs, however, is another preference that has to be parsed when rendering pages. And also, that doesn't help with the problem of "moderators" using their points to mark up some inane comment that does nothing to contribute to meaningful discussion. So maybe a good solution would be to severely limit the number of Funny mod points available. Maybe only allow someone to mark a comment as Funny, once every 5 times they become moderator. Implementing this sort of system would not only prevent moderators from abusing the Funny rating, but it might actually let a TRULY funny comment filter to the top every so often.
