A common misconception about the war in Iraq is that there was one overriding motive which led to it taking place; In fact there were several

The Iraqi regime had recently switched from Dollars to Euros for Oil trading, harming the US economy.

Certain charitable causes (especially within the UK) wanted to get rid of the oppressive regime - this also made good PR in the US, where wars are routinely used to ensure that the gullible majority vote for the incumbent president.

The US government was concerned about possible weapons of mass destruction, despite the fact that it still has a stock well over 100 times the potency of the Iraqi regime at its highest extent.

The US arms industry needs new markets - and the up and coming civil war in the former state of Iraq will give them a much needed boost to revenue.
