Journal FortKnox's Journal: Classic Sci-Fi Auction 20

Wow.
Ebay Live will be auctioning "Classic Sci-Fi Props" (go ahead and check it out, there are previews and expected pricing).

Everything from an Alien Pulse rifle, to the earpiece Uhura used in ST4. Lotsa star trek stuff, but also aliens, the original batman, and even the original vadar mask (which is expected to go around $50k, but I see it more in the hundreds of thousands).

But for the poor, there are lots of ST:TNG props that will go around $100-$500.

  • Why pay $50K+ for a freaking mask. To each their own, but this just strikes me as the "Ultimate Sign you are a geek and won't get laid..."

Of course, if you have $50K+ to spend on a freaking movie prop, you probably have enough money to get laid. Although I have a mental picture of a pimple-faced, wookie-shirt-wearing, long-haired, greasy geek who has spent the last 17 years saving for this day.
    • While I completely agree with your feelings: it's not just worth the money, try to put yourself in the skin of a 40-year-old-enough-money-having-trekkie. Well, if *I* were such a person, I would not buy a mask or something like that. I would *definately* buy this [ebay.com] for the missus! Imagine, you can finally fullfill your life-long dream of F**King a "Female Startrek Engineer". It would even be better if you have a 21 year young secretary which is also you mistress. Whoohoohoo!

      Okay, I'm dirty minded...

I guess I really am not geeky enough. For all my years buried in programming books, I never got into science fiction. Sure, I enjoy it like the next average guy, but not the fan fare that is so rampant here. Sometimes I feel like I'm not a true nerd because I just don't like Star Trek. Oh well.

You are never to young, or old, to be a Dirty Old Man.
        • There are all kind of nerds. Hey, I like the occasional Star Trek on TV. Just plain entertainment. You won't catch me with spock-ears and the like.

Other nerds are completely into Star Wars, and other adore both, others don't like either. Well, I'm going to be crucified around here, but I don't like Star Wars for example...
To each his liking. It's a friggin movie/TVshow after all.

I agree completely. I fully apply as "Dirty Old Man". Heheh

Unless it's Ender's Game, I'm not all that fond of it if it's Sci-Fi. Some Sci-Fi is ok to watch, like Battlestar Galactica because it was something I grew up with and I remember the fun at the Universal Studios display. Aside from that, I think most of it blows. It's created to satisfy the sense of disjointed social constructs
            • I don't know "Ender's Game", but "Red Dwarf" [reddwarf.co.uk] was damned cool... Too bad I only got to see the first season. I saw it while being a student in Antwerp. Unfortunatly, German and French TV don't show British comedy because "people don't get it". Though I have seen some Monthy Python on German TV... and of course Benny Hill on French TV, but that one shouldn't be a surprise.

It's amazing the cultural diversity of humor. American vs. German vs. English vs. Japanese. I know a lot of people who don't get Japanese humor at all, while I find it hilarious. In the same vein, I know Japanese people who ca
    • The guy I carpool with has an entire room of his house devoted to Star Wars collectibles. I can just about hear him drooling from the other side of the office right now....

Some of that stuff will bust through the reserve and expected price in a heartbeat. Other stuff... They're being incredibly optimistic on. $40,000 for a crappy looking model of the ship from 'Day the Earth Stood Still'? Perhaps in 1999, but today? $20,000 for a medical scanner from TOS? Maybe some doctor (specialist or ER doc:) who was motivated to go into medicine because of this.

I wouldn't mind the pulse rifle from Aliens, but it looks pretty darned cheap. It's cast in solid resin, and you can definately
    • I didn't submit it, just posted it to the journal. Feel free to submit it, though.
      • Why waste my time submitting? Hell, I read 'Mek', a comic referenced in CT's last JE, and he doesn't want me to talk about it, so fuck him. My time is better spent replying to JE's and playing online games. Perhaps if I could figure out how to write a submission for it including reference to the 'evil bit'.... (I know, it was on purpose, and pointed fun at /., but there's far too much truth in it. And they still won't tell me what 'a day in the life of a /. editor is')
  • I thought the production company keeps all props after a production wraps. Are there flexible companies that will let some things like costumes or The Mask go? Would the 78" model from Top Gun go to the effects house that made it and later sold it to a collector, or perhaps the company head took it home and sold it? I've heard how some actors get to keep a costume they wore, but this action has so many random pieces.
  • I think I know where I stand now.

I'm geeky enough to see a TNG Varon-T Disruptor prop, know what it is, and think to myself "They're really underestimating the value of that thing. After all, it's banned in the Federation, and only five of them were built."

But I'm not geeky enough to actually want to buy anything. And that's an encouraging thing. :-)

  • Here's two images from "Lot Number: 11 - Back to the Future II prop printout [ebay.com]":

Is it just me or are there no perforated side edges with tractor feed holes in the movie photo (yet the one being auctioned off has them)?

    • That is a bit suspicious. It could be that the one being auctioned off was one of many versions that was constructed. It doesn't appear to be the one that was used, however.
