Journal tomhudson's Journal: Time to abandon the "new" Daylight Savings Time hours. 10

The extension of daylight savings time to the first Sunday of November was supposed to save energy. It didn't. What it did do was mess up people's biological clocks even more, by making them out of sync with their local time for a longer period.

I switched back to EDT a couple of weeks ago. It's a lot better than feeling drained by the middle of the afternoon.

Time to bring this "experiment" to an end.

Time to abandon the "new" Daylight Savings Time hours.

  • The ratio of dumbass farmers to regular people is way down, so why are we suffering any DST?
    • Poor management? Despite decades of "experience" (mostly in denial) businesses still haven't come to grips with flexible scheduling. Look at how few "hi-tech" businesses have embraced telecommuting, despite the proven cost savings and improved employee morale.
    • Yeah, but they need to shift the time zones about three degrees to the west. I really hate it when it gets dark before six.

      • Well, today sunrise is 7:29 am, sunset 5:48pm DST (or 6:29 am EDT and 4:48pm EDT), so our choice is either "dark in the morning" or "dark in the evening". In another couple of weeks, we'll be down to less than 10 hours of daylight, so based on a 16-hour "daytime", we're hosed.

No wonder everyone puts on weight in the winter - the seasons are screaming "go into hibernation you idjit".

      • I hate it when the sun sets before 3PM. Cry me a river.

        • So do I - when the time changes for everyone else next week, it's going to start getting dark around 4pm, and get worse as we approach December 21st. But I want to get up with the sun, not go to sleep at sunset (most productive coding time is, for some odd reason, after midnight).
        • I also hate it when the temps dip below 18C (~65F)

  • It was supposed to save money. Of course, it didn't do that, either. At best it may have been financially neutral though in reality it likely cost significantly.

On a different note, I'm surprised you weren't the submitter for the RMS story on the front page. That story has your name written all over it... I figured it would have been almost as significant of a slashdot-humor moment for you as discovering railgunner to be a liberal was for me.
    • It must have been submitted at the same time that it was posted anonymously in one of my JEs in reply to one of my critiques on RMS. I applaud the submitter for getting it to the front page - and various people for stepping up and not being part of the group-think that RMS is actually somehow "good" for open source, rather than being the F/LOSS Fred Phelps.

Open source has a lot of problems - from the public perception (which RMS's statements reinforce) that it's about violating copyrights at will, to th

  • getting rid of it completely - I'm on board.

adjusting it in any way is not worth the cost. the last time it got moved was an incredible pain that cost some rather expensive downtime for the team I was with at the time.

I would have switched today but instead I flew from Budapest to Bangkok and so my body has bigger issues at the moment. Just trying to stay awake until tonight so I can hopefully get a good start on adjusting.
