      Especially the 40MPH standard on rural roads. Which seems weird considering that Eastern Washington is just as barren and huge distances as Eastern Oregon. At only 40MPH, it can take you an hour and a half between gas stations.

          Tell that to all the idiots who go 65 in a 65 when it is pouring down rain and end up hydroplaning into a side ditch, or even worse, into each other.

          Speed limits are put into place given stopping distance for average road conditions and average traffic densities. Given how overcrowded america's roads are, people should often be going a good deal slower than the speed limit. And if it is pouring down rain,

            Speed limits were put in place to save gas. The "benefits" were invented afterward.

            Stopping distance has absolutely nothing to do with speed, unless there's a brick wall in front of you. Or you're driving with limited site distance. Otherwise, it's safe until about 100 mph. Breaking distance is what tailgating laws are for, and that is a very big safety concern. Yet those

              Stopping distance increases as speed increases. (obviously :) ) If the person in front of you has to break suddenly because some moron decided to merge in without signaling (and with no actual room to merge...), in the time it takes you to react you will have traveled much further @85 MPH than at 65 MPH. You will also have less time to do things such as quickly glance to your sides to see if it is safe

                I'd also like to note, that no one who is obeying the speed limit has ever gotten a ticket! :)

                Not true. I was driving behind a pack that was going two miles per hour below the speed limit because a cop was driving in front of them at that speed. I decided to be a smart alec and pass them all while going the speed limit. I was careful to user my turning signal (always do that anyway), leave enough room, and never go faster then the limit.

                Another cop pulled up and gave me a wreckless driving ticket. Stated re
