So is this thing going to replace email/IM/cellphones/writing by hand?

I've read a few articles about it, but I guess nothing about it has grabbed me. What do you, yourself, use it for, if you don't mind my asking?

I use it for fun. "Ooh shiny" style.

For the most part, it is way to cumbersome, confusing, and slow. It'll either die soon, or be a web collaboration tool.

I watched the original seventy minute [google.com] demo. After it, I couldn't help but thinking that MS Exchange / Lotus Domino / Novell GroupWise are forever in the "LEGACY" camp.

That is to say, I think Google Wave is the new thing, and the old things are something we maintain, but do not like.

There is a minor problem with Wave, that there is too much overhead in TCP/IP for it to be speedy over the Internet. But on a local server, it is awesome (compared to the legacy communication forms).

Everything that is annoying about SMTP conversations goes away when you use Wave to access a single instance communication.

And everything that is *not* annoying about SMTP conversations also goes away when you use Wave to access a single instance communication.

Wave replies on bottom, allows edits of history, requires being connected to the network, doesn't show what you were looking at when you replied. The playback feature is could help somewhat, but is mostly just a useless feature.
