Journal johnsonav's Journal: Did Anyone Else Notice This? 5

So...

I was browsing around on the front page, and clicked on this story. I noticed that the little box in the upper right hand corner, which normally has my user information, had someone else's. Every time I refreshed the page, the page thought I was a different user.

Clicking around, on different front page stories, I found that some pages had this behavior and some didn't.

Is this happening to anyone else?

  • The first time I clicked that link, slashdot identified me as Roger6106 [slashdot.org]. Then I refreshed and it correctly identified me, and each subsequent re-loading of the page had me identified correctly. This could lead to some interesting things happening around here if the pages actually hold the incorrect identification for any period of time...
    • Damn it. I thought I might be the only one to unlock /. "God Mode".

Well, it only worked for me once. If it still works for you, then you have truly unlocked it. Have you tried to actually do anything as those other users? One could have way too much fun if that bug was reliably exploitable; posting as other users, changing relationships, editing journals... That would also tell us rather clearly if it is a meaningful bug, or just a very strange display issue.

No, I didn't. And, it seems to have stopped happening. I guess my window of opportunity is closed.

Even though I didn't actually attempt to do anything as one of the other users, it wasn't just the different name in the box, in the upper right of the page. It also showed the same name under the "Slashdot" logo in the bar at the top of the page. It changed the comment display settings, depending on which user I "was"; sometimes it was old style, sometimes new, different thresholds, etc. Also, sometimes (for u

          • Oh well. It's gone now. People complain about the bugs in the code here.

That may well make it the shortest-lived bug here ever. I have pointed out several bugs in my journal that have yet to be addressed after several months (the firehose in particular).

I think it makes it kind of exciting. You never know what you're going to find when you log in!

So perhaps they gave us this bug on purpose, to show us that not all bugs are bad?
