I got to my own page (http://slashdot.org/~yourusername) and I see it in the upper-right corner... It's very small. Not very intuitive.... You can however see your messages still on http://slashdot.org/messages.pl?op=list [slashdot.org]
And by sticking it in a darker green gradient box inside the dark green gradient box, it has made the page even uglier than before. Good work topping the Idle layout, slashdot.
I'm beginning to wonder if all of this is the true face of the U of M "user interface" research project. It's not the ajax-iness itself that is under investigation, it's research into how ugly and unusable the site can be made before a significant number of people stop using it.

The firehose [slashdot.org] is in some ways even better; I frequently get black text on a black background there. I suspect Zaphod might have helped with that decision...

Which M, and which research project? I poked around for a while and I did not find the project you mention. I found a Visible Human Project [umd.edu] at the University of Maryland, but that is quite beautiful by any measure so I can't see how any person could have mutilated that into what we now have on slashdot.
But only beecause I keep slashdot.org/my/inbox [slashdot.org] open in another tab. I have the main page in one tab, and a journal search [slashdot.org] in a third.
So essentially my "slashdot window" has tabs as follows:
Journal search
My inbox
Main page
I'm sure someone thought this was a good idea. Not sure who that idiot might be...
