Factorials were someone's attempt to make math LOOK exciting.
Why even go past 4? (or 2000 for that matter?) (Score:2)

3k had a single 256x256 grid - 4x the area
4 had (if you made the map 256x256 tile segments) 4x4 grids, meaning 1x x 1k, and nice graphics.
if 5 had been just more of the same, say 2x x 2k, (with individual tiles up to 512*512) it would have been a must-have. They could also have added optional start years of 1800 and 1850 - rail transport and stagecoach, hick towns, the 2 wws, etc.

They added even more detail, but reduced the size of the map; they said they couldn't get their game engine (glassbox, same as SC4) to render large maps with the extra details and features.
Everyone is complaining about the city being too small. So no, there's no reason to go beyond SC4.
