Journal sootman's Journal: New user pages suck even more than I thought! 5

So it's bad enough that the new user pages look like Digg tried to swallow Slashdot and threw up on the screen. I've gotten used to going to /~sootman/comments instead of just /~sootman. But when I tried to get my "did I get modded?" fix while out and about I learned the horrible truth: that the new pages totally fall apart on the iPhone. See a screenshot here. It's IMPOSSIBLE to see how your comments are scored. It doesn't get any better in landscape mode. I'm over 30 so I don't usually say this but there's no other word... FAIL.

New user pages suck even more than I thought!

  • Unless you are reading on a screen that is at least as wide as a 20" traditional monitor.

And if it works at all on your iPhone, be grateful. Slashdot completely and utterly crashes the BlackBerry. If I try to load slashdot in my BlackBerry browser I have to remove the battery to get it to work again.

Though for that matter, there are still several browsers on PCs that don't even render the slashdot main page correctly anymore, or can't handle the spiffy new script. I can't even remember now how many times I've had to click "cancel" regarding the script on the main page since the new code went live.

Yeah, I think it also kills the most recent Safari that can be run in OS X 10.3.9 also. And don't even get me started on the abomination that is Slashdot when you're not logged in. WTF are they trying to do? Oh yeah, and even on a reasonably good system, like Safari in OS X 10.4.11 with all the updates, there are still glaring, amateurish flaws. Here's how the reply button looks: http://pixelcity.com/reply.jpg [pixelcity.com]

      Conclusion: they suck.

The funny thing about the BlackBerry is that Slashdot is, once you strip out

  • I should have mentioned that in case you didn't already know, there is an option in preferences to get a message when your comments are moderated. If you turn that on you'll generally get 1 or 2 messages per day telling you the results of moderation on your comments.
