Journal jsin's Journal: Goin' back to Cali

Before Digg, before RSS, even before MyYahoo!, there was ./ (slashdot).

I was feeling old-school this morning and decided that this week I'm going to get all of my news from ./ for the first time in at least three years. Setting aside my trusty Google Reader, I visited http://slashdot.org and tried to remember my login credentials.

Surprisingly, I got it on the first try.

I was immediately asked to drink from the firehose. I didn't know what the firehose was, but how could I turn down an invitation like that?

I spent a few minutes +ing and -ing stories and then turned over to my preferences page. I was expecting to find a way to filter stories, maybe par things down to areas I'm interested in but no such luck. I seem to remember there being a way to do this, but it's not here; maybe I'll stumble across it later in the week.

I'm trying to get the most out of the site which is part of the reason I'm journaling this adventure. The other part of my reasoning should be obvious.
