Journal damn_registrars's Journal: Have slashdot admins checked out for the last time? 11
When i was looking at my email today (yes, damn.registrars@gmail.com is real) I took a moment to check for slashdot-related mail in there. I noticed that there was an email that I sent to admin@slashdot.org back in November when the message system was borked. Almost two months to the day and ... nothing.

Maybe it's just chrome, but I've never seen this site as broken as it currently is. I had to reply to a comment, because the fail of css has all kinds of crap covering up the button to let me make a top level comment.

Considering there has never been a functional search mechanism for them, how can you tell if they are still there or not? I would wager that >>99% of all the material here over 2 weeks old could disappear this afternoon and it wouldn't be noticed for years. The only way to keep track of old stuff is to keep bookmarking it or linking to it in newer stuff.

Unfortunately I cannot retrieve all the stories this way. It used to just roll back page by page, but they took that away. I doubt this will last much longer either. That, and if I discover they remove/edit comments, is when Slashdot will lose its real value.

I agree that the discussions are (usually) the more valuable part of slashdot. However, since there is no functional way (using slashdot, google, or any other mechanism that I know of) to search comments by text, the archived comments aren't that enormously valuable unless you have some way of keeping track of them yourself. Once a comment is more than ~2 weeks old or so finding it again is a huge PITA. They should be retained, but they should also be searchable.
