White House discloses details of e-mail backup system

The Bush administration has told a federal court that it has backup media that "should contain substantially all e-mail" that is the subject of ongoing litigation alleging that officials illegally deleted millions of e-mail messages. But the groups suing the White House disagree that the tapes contain the messages in question.

This is a great time to be in evidence recovery.

Perhaps there's something in the story you seem to be quoting (but not providing a link or any other attribution for) which matches up with the headline, but the body of your post seems to contradict it. Not to mention spoiling the Rosemary Woods joke I had planned as well. :-)

I posted in haste, but by rerecording over their back up tapes they may have lost some email. This is in clear violation of the Presidential Records Act and yes, there is a great Rosemary Woods joke.

When I finally got up today there was an article about this in the News and Observer so I'm more familiar with the details now, and am inclined to suspect that "lost some email" may be a charitable interpretation.
