Chacham's Journal: Mpeg editor

Someone wants an MPEG editor for linux. Like change screensize or codec or whatever to make the file smaller. Anyone have any ideas?

An editor can split, splice, color correct, add effects and titles, and all that. What you are asking for is a transcoding toolkit.

FFMPEG (ffmpeg.sourceforge.net) has good transcoding abilities, but lacks the ability to encode MPEG-2.

mencoder (part of the mplayer package at www.mplayerhq.hu) includes the ffmpeg engine and codecs but also adds some more stuff, so it's a little more complete.

Both packages will let you resize, recompress, and to a lesser extent, cut and splice video.

If you're working with DV, you can try kino (http://kino.schirmacher.de/), but you're probably going to need ffmpeg or mencoder to handle compression for you when youre done with your assembly.

For a full-fledged deal, try Cinelerra (Formerly Broadcast 2000) at http://www.heroinewarrior.com/cinelerra.php3 .. course again you'll need ffmpeg or mencoder to handle better compression after you're done editing (and probably to help you get the source material into the program too)

And these are only the opensource apps... Editing video with Linux gives you a lot of power, but it's not terribly convenient for the tinkerer. If you're asking for a VirtualDub equivalent on Linux, there really isn't one (yet?) .. sorry
