Do not buy Seagate 320 gig drives. (Score:3, Interesting)
They'll probably die on you within a day, and Seagate won't replace it with a new one. I've had 4 out of 4 brand new 320 gig drives die in the last 2 weeks, from 2 different retailers, all totally shot within the first 24 hours.
Avoid any Seagate stamped "Made in China" - they're from the old Maxtor China plant, and it looks like they have problems.
Better off to buy Western Digital - yes, the warranty is only 3 years instead of 5, but I doubt Seagate will even be around in 5 years, if the emails and pho

I was wondering why you've been hating on Seagate lately, since that's all I've bought recently. Now you've said the model you had bought was basically a relabeled Maxtor...alles klar.

As long as they aren't made at the China factory, you're probably ok with a 320, but a LOT of people are reporting that drives coming out of the China facility have really high failure rates. The same rates that drove Maxtor into bankruptcy and into Seagate's arms.
It used to be, way back when (like when drives cost $7/meg) that I only recommended Western Digital and Seagate, and that worked for me. Pretty much every Maxtor has been back to the factory, or became hinkey just out of warranty. Sure, they re

This Seagate [newegg.com] at Newegg is 250 gig for $75 plus shipping. I don't know what the shipping will be exactly but they say $7.81 for 3 day, so there's probably cheaper options than that.

*wink wink nudge nudge* I have 4 brand new Seagate 320 gig hard drives, with validated 5 years (less a few days) warranties, that I'd let go for $60 a piece, and take the loss, just to buy some half-decent Western Digitals.
Of course, you have to understand they all died within 24 hours, and Seagate is insisting on exchanging them for used "refurbished" drives of the same make and model "which meet the same quality standards as new drives" (they don't see the irony in that statement, even though I've poin

500GB for $119.99 [buy.com], designed by PorshA! and all so you know it looks good.
For cheaper you can get something like 200GB for $69.95 [buy.com].
Hard drives is something I don't spend money on, odds are that by the time you fill up the 200GB, hard drives will be significantly cheaper and it'll make more sense to just get a new one then. They're effectively disposable IMHO. I just buy new ones for $50-75 whenever my old one fills up or breaks.

I second the LaCie... I've got two 250G, I got for 99€ a while ago (being a year, I think) They work fine. Recently I saw a 500G for a bit over 100€, but I really had no need for it.
At this side of the pond we don't have stuff like rebates. After talking to Americans about them, I think they're a scam.

I've used them for client file backups for a LONG time. Very reliable drives, not necessarily cheap, but very good. Typical WD on average.
