Journal Shadow Wrought's Journal: Bridgeport 14

I attended the Slashdot 10th Anniversary Party at Bridgeport Pub last night. I think its one of the first so far, and it was a very good time. I had not actually friended any of the attendees before hand, so it was folks who were knew to me. There were some old school geeks, some new school, and the usual awkwardness over we should introduce ourselves by our given name or our handle. I would very much recommend attendence for folks because it is nice to meet people who you otherwise wouldn't.

For myself I will also be checking out PLUG after meeting some of its members. I've learned quite a bit about Linux and FreeBSD, but I have so much more to learn that I think this will be an excellent resource. I also found out that Linus himself not only lives in the area, but in my town! Now I have to start paying more attention to folks at the grocery store;-) Unfortunately I don't have much in the way of coolness to win the $1000 thinkgeek certificate, other than meeting some great people, hearing my first goatse comment in real life, and clubbing with Linus and his entourage of Trailblazer cheerleaders... Well, two out of three. Linus wasn't actually there for the Slashdot party.

Finally, the folks below are the ones I hung out with last night. There were some others there as well, but I didn't chat with them and I missed their handles:-(

    Always, always always the handle.

Incidentally, I just friended Black Art yesterday. Some clear-headed perspective there.

A good friending too, IMHO, he's a good guy and has a lot of experience. As for the handle, there's just something weird about introducing myself as "Shadow Wrought." But, if you can pull off "Captain Splendid," than I should have no qualms, eh?

Well, to be fair, it's a nickname I acquired a long time ago, and IRL to boot. Basically, I've been called Captain Splendid long before I got on the 'net.

Wow. Can you tell how the moniker got stuck to you?

          • It's a British expression. The simplest way to explain it is it's meant to denote someone with big ideas or lofty ideals who fucks it all up and ends up looking like an idiot as often as he manages to pull off something cool and brilliant.

It was bestowed upon me by manager (and friend) back in '93. When I got on the 'net a few years later, it was a natural for use as it was (and is) fairly rare.

Oh hell nizo is easier to say than my real name....

Sadly there is a party here with only one attendee so far :-(

        • If you're willing to fly me out I'll happily attend with you;-) I was going to say that you could attend the Michigan party with Taco since that's right next to New Mexico, but then I realized I was confusing Michigan with Maine.

This joke brought to you by not enough sleep and/or caffeine;-)

          • My favorite was the people in North Carolina who thought New Mexico was an island in the Gulf of Mexico or Pacific or something.

              Its not? ;-)

My folks are actually in the vicinity of Albaquerque these days. They were road trippingfrom CA there and back for the Balloon Festivities.

Sadly everyone has been too sick for us to go, and tomorrow is the last day :-( I have hardly even seen any floating around town. Sigh.
  • Way to not be at the second event, Captain No Show :)

There were 7 or 8 people there, mostly folks who'd been at the first one. There's plans for a third, also at Bridgeport, 8-10.

And if you'd like to be added to the new discussion group, email me :)
Hope we see you again soon.
      • Well I've no doubt missed the third, too by now, but would like to make it back for another one. The e-mail is sent though, so hopefully I'll make one of the upcoming ones though. I have an upcoming trial that's going to have me in Eugene for most of November and December, so it might be the new year before I get there...
    • I wonder... Do you think Captain No Show and Captain Obvious could have known each other at West Point? I hear they are both still stunned that Major Debacle got promoted over them;-)
