twitter's Journal: Modbomb Shows Difficulty of Controling Online Opinion. 8

Journal by twitter

The successful modbombing of this account shows both the strength and futility of astroturfing. The troll community has dedicated dozens of accounts and several people's worth of full time effort to harass, smear and downmod me. When they got their way, they created a 76 comment, troll investigation style parade to celebrate. That's quite a show of force, but it's ultimately an expensive waste. The effect is temporary and my opinions continue to be received favorably when published under different accounts. Far from showing a problem with the moderation system, this shows how well it works.

It's amazing how one person can so easily tie up the resources of one of the world's wealthiest and most powerful companies. The stories I write in my spare time are frequently published. While Twitter might be down, I'm not. Even if they could discover all of my accounts by asking my ISP, I could always create new ones and continue saying what I think. It's obvious someone does not like the things I think and the way I express myself, but they are powerless to do anything about it. People who offer to "clean" the web are selling snake oil.

The real answer is to quit doing things that are wrong, that make people angry and need to be covered up with massive lie campaigns. "Get the Facts" and similar are huge failures that have done more harm than good. The non free software development model never worked very well and is now obviously defeated.

Update

Mega troll, the bungi is bold enough to tell me why he's mod bombing me. Others celebrate, intimidate and threaten anonymously. This is the first account to mention the Vista failure log as a reason, and then goes on to defend other outrageous M$ behavior.

Suck it up Bungi and tell your boss that Vista's failure is not something that can be hidden. M$'s billion dollar a month advertising budget can't hide Vista's flaws or convince people Vista has something they need. As I noted above, astroturfing does not work.

Here's good evidence of astroturfing failure if not backfire. Ha ha, trolls, suck it up.

I can agree with this. If you did that, maybe you'd stop being modded down.
  • M$ and many other companies and groups now use "Open" as marketeer-spin, and they ain't obviously defeated. M$ converts "Office Industry[OEM/OSD] XML (OIXML)" into "Office Open XML (OOXML)". The only possible reason (I think) for all the "Marketeer-spin" is to perpetrate an "Open-Fraud" on a global market scale, dilute the financial clout that the term "Open" for small innovative software, research ... businesses, non-profit foundations, governments ..., and prevent competition and innovation that promotes
  • I agree there's a huge amount of astroturfing going on here. They're doing their best to stifle you.

Of course they're not too sophisticated so when you lure them out they make easy targets. I've exploited this to bring more light to the issues they want to hide. Where I catch a downmod, I get three more up and it's easy karma for me. It would be nice if their approach to ridicule was not to stifle it, but to earn it less.

Sorry the twitter account is so trashed. To be honest though a little more subtl

  • It's not much, but I wanted to let you know I just modded up your last 5 posts. Hopefully it undoes some of the karma damage you've had.

The troll community. Yes. Right. Whatever you say, twitter.
