Journal mcgrew's Journal: A mild rant 7

I've been listening to KSHE since the day they changed format in 1967. They play some great rock and roll.

They're a hundred miles away; Im in the fringe reception area so I listen online. So a few days ago I'm editing random Scribblings and the music stops. I curse Firefox and Flash and ComCast and pull the browser up to refresh the page that plays the music, and I see "Still listening?"

Well, no, YOU SHUT OFF THE MUSIC! WTF, if I wasn't listening I wouldn't have it running!

I do see why they started that, though: $$$. They have to pay the RIAA and ASCAP fees, which vary according to how many people are listening, and they don't want to pay for someone who isn't.

Still, it's annoyance.

A mild rant

  • They pulled it because it got too popular. Culture must be rationed out, or the price plummets. Capitalism cannot function without scarcity.

That sounds strange to me, can you point me to a link? Usually he more popular a thing is, the more it earns. KSHE doesn't have a "deep tracks" show but they've always played them. They also still play whole albums; I sampled ACDC's new one last Sunday. The RIAA would scream PIRACY!!!

      • They didn't play commercials. You can go to wdrv.com but deep tracks is gone, beaten by copyright royalties and greedy monopolies.

Interesting article, but a bit suspect. I think probably the difference between "Deep Tracks and KSHE [liquidcompass.net] is that "deep tracks" is a secondary stream similar to KSHE2; you need a digital radio to pick it up, and KSHE (which is listened to world-wide) is the main feed, and KSHE2 isn't streamed. Your link says "A great deal of care went into the "Deep Tracks' station, making it one of highest quality rock stations in America. the music was locally programmed and carefully selected. DJs were used to give greater i

          • The second channel is still up on the FM (I didn't know all that went digital too. How bad does that suck when the signal fades?). The article is only saying they don't want to pay the fees, and so they just killed the internet streaming, which makes them even bigger assholes. I don't see anything 'suspect' about the matter. A gazillion dollars just isn't enough for some people.

In the case of deep tracks, I just liked hearing familiar voices no matter where I am. The playlist was not very big actually. I'd

FM is now an analog/digital mix. They broadcast the analog channel with two digital channels piggybacked on the signal. They don't call it digital, they call it "High Def".

And if they're too broke to pay the fees, they must have trouble selling ads. KSHE has no problem, but they're probably the most popular station in St Louis.

              • Nobody said they were broke. They're just being greedy fucks. It was a simple business decision that probably made the bean counters a nice bonus.
