Journal maryjanecapri's Journal: How to find open source developers 3

Here's the deal: I am a hair stylist for a salon. I am also a long-time Linux user (pre 2.0 kernel circa 1995). I am not, unfortunately, a developer. I have been combing the net for an application to use at our salon for booking of clients, stylists calendars, inventory, and client information. The program must be open source, and run on Linux. The problems are:

1) I have no budget for this.
2) All salon software seems to be Windows or Mac only.

So I sent an invite out to the Feodora mailing list to see if there was a developer out there interested in working on this project with me. I would server in two ways: testing ground/feedback and writing documentation (I write Linux content for CNET.)

This could be good exposure for a developer or team of developers to get their wares into a niche that currently has no open source solution. But no one seems to be interested. So I ask, how could one find open source developers interested in such a project?

  • Very simple... you pay them.

If the thing you want developed is worth anything to you, then you should be willing to allocate some $$ for its development.

I don't think a lot of developers want to write code they wont even use without getting paid to do so. There might be some, but I certainly wouldn't be surprised if they are hard to find, and I'd be even more surprised if they aren't already crazy busy. I know the list of projects I want to do for myself but don't have time to do is pretty long. And finally - writing software for f
  • Sounds ripe for an intranet application. You might even be able to start with existing software like phpgroupware. You say you have no budget, but would you be willing to barter?
