Journal eldavojohn's Journal: A Non-Terminal Problem With Wikipedia 3

At the risk of referring you to SomethingAwful, there is an article that drew my interest in that it points out a problem with Wikipedia. Although the beloved open encyclopedia has overcome many problems of graffiti and defamation, there are subtler problems with it--like the fact that the entry on Modern Warfare pales in comparison to the entry on Lightsaber Combat. But it doesn't end there, the article offers up quite a few examples of what seem to be obvious inconsistencies between two articles where the former should ideally be more thoroughly explored than the latter. Most of this is for your enjoyment, however, as this topic is often merely a matter of perspective.

A Non-Terminal Problem With Wikipedia

Comments Filter:
  • "Modern Warfare" entry is more portal-like, with links to separate sections on other pages, while "Lightsaber Combat" tends to be single topic-encompassing article.
    • There's also the problem of scope. Modern Warfare is a general term about warfare, there isn't much to it specifically. Lightsaber combat is a fictitious set of martial arts, about which writers keep making stuff up. If anything, one should, at least, try to keep the two compared items within the same scope. For example, the article on Fencing [wikipedia.org] is of comparable length, and also links to specific other styles of formalized sword combat. The Lightsaber article is all inclusive of the styles.
