Journal pudge's Journal: Jackson and Sharpton on Intolerability 2

Don Imus said some things that some people reasonably found offensive. Al Sharpton wants Imus fired, saying:

"Somewhere we must draw the line in what is tolerable in mainstream media," Sharpton said Sunday. "We cannot keep going through offending us and then apologizing and then acting like it never happened. Somewhere we've got to stop this."

The Rev. Jesse Jackson said his RainbowPUSH Coalition plans to protest Monday in Chicago outside the offices of NBC, which owns MSNBC, over the remark Imus made last Wednesday during his show.

I would rather we put a stop to the mainstream media censoring everyone that offends Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson. If we censored everyone who offended another group of people, almost everyone interesting would be censored ... including, of course, Sharpton and Jackson.

Hm. Maybe Sharpton's on to something!

While I agree with what you're saying here, all Jackson is doing (according to this article, at least, which is my only information on the story) is planning to stage a protest outside the building. That seems to be the appropriate response to speech that one strongly disagrees with, the opposite of Sharpton's approach -- though I suppose it depends what is actually written on the placards at the protest.

I was not directly implying Jackson was calling for Imus to be fired, only that I think Jackson is offensive. :-) That said, I did assume in my mind that Jackson would also call for his firing, and FWIW, from today's story [cnn.com]:

The Rev. Jesse Jackson and about 50 people marched Monday outside Chicago's NBC tower to protest Imus' comments. He said MSNBC should abandon Imus and MSNBC should hire more black pundits.
