Journal zmef420's Journal: Freetricity? Small-scale wind & solar generator 1

OK, so a while back now I was working on a business plan and stumbled across the website of a startup company offering a very intriguing product, a small wind and solar generator system. The product is about the size of a digital satellite dish and the basic unit is claimed to produce 300 watts and includes a 700 watt inverter. Being the impulse buyer that I am, I quickly purchased some of these units but sadly they still haven't arrived. I'm starting to worry that I've been duped. My question to the /. community is, whadya think? Does this look like an actually functional product, or a pipe dream? Check it out at http://freetricity.com/ and let me know.

And please save the lectures. I know I should have done the research before making the purchase but such is life. Trust me, your not illuminating the point any more than my wife already has...repeatedly.

  • I'm not optimistic.

They don't even give the dimensions of one of these units. Judging from the photograph, I'd estimate the blades on the windmill to be less that one foot, and the solar panel perhaps one half square foot.

Wikipedia estimates a windmill with 100 meter blades, at sea level and and 8 meter/second wind, will generate 2.5 megawatts. With blades less than one three hundredths of that, the power generated should be about 1/100,000, or 25 watts. Your results probably wouldn't be that good.
