Journal nizo's Journal: Lose weight while you work 20

At the Mayo Clinic in Rochester they have developed "The Office of the Future". From the article:

Most visitors think they've walked into a gym.

The creator of the "Office of the Future" is quick to correct them.

"This is a fully functioning office. My entire staff works here," explains James Levine, M.D., as he walks on a moving treadmill that serves as both desk and computer platform. "The idea is to introduce an environment that will encourage activity in the workplace. Just as it's hard to be a couch potato without a couch, it's hard to sit all day at work without a chair or a conventional desk or cubicle.

They even have "moving meeting rooms" as well as a walking track for one-on-one chats. And best of all, the vertical desks are half the cost of a cubicle.

Lose weight while you work

  • If you don't mind. I walk to and from home to get to work, and when I'm not too busy, skateboard the 2 miles over to campus to attend early morning and late afternoon seminars.

Ahh, but for the slothful among us, who live rather far from work, this would be awesome.
      • Well, like I said, I live maybe 20 blocks from work and it is twice as far to campus. But I'm slacking now - I used to walk all the way to campus for work most days.

Now if I could just get enough sleep - darn WoW! I will master my skills (just got 75 bow skill in one session and broke 125 for leather and skinning and 80 for cooking).
      • I usually drive, unless it's nice out and I can ride bicycle (not now - winter.) .When all else fails I over caffeinate on coffee and go from there to a steady stream of 5+ cups of green tea.
      • I don't know about you, but I rather like my cubicle, nice chair, and not having to move during my work day. Especially since my knees are bad ever since my time in the Army. If I wanted to exercise during work every day, I would have just stayed enlisted...
        • I'm on a mission to restore everyone's hurt knees, so pardon my proselytizing. Did you hurt your knees doing skydiving or just running-type exercises? If the former, I'll have to just bow out. If the latter, I'd like to recommend a good stretching regimen [itbs.info]. It can actually repair sore knees. My knees used to hurt when I run. I'm now capable of running marathons (I ran my last one in October in 3 hours, 52 minutes). Interestingly enough, I failed the army physical nearly 20 years ago. :)

          (Full disclosure: I

I got hit by a car while I was in a crosswalk by some idiot sergeant who wasn't paying attention to his surroundings while driving.

I spent months in physical therapy and my knees haven't been the same since.
            • I assume he outranked you so it was your fault, right?

Can you at least bike or are your knees too messed up even for that?

Actually, due to the adrenaline rush there was little pain. I yelled at him (a lot) and kept going where I was going. The pain got worse as the evening progressed, and the next day I could barely move and things were blue and black.

Can you at least bike or are your knees too messed up even for that?

I can bike, but it rains 9 months out of the year here.

Actually, I intend to get more exercise with WiiSports! :)

Well, as soon as I can get my hands on a Wi
    • I would think that ideally I'd be able to do half a day on the treadmill and half a day sitting down (interspersed). The kinds of things you think about while walking can be very different from the kinds of things you think about while sitting.
  • I can just see it now. Hooking up generators to the treadmills to power whatever the person needs to have powered. If they aren't active enough their computers shut down. It could be sold as an energy saving device as it could help reduce an office's dependence from the local power company.

Ok, not so much, but some places might see it as a way to go green at least a little bit.

And what about if you are ill? Is there an option to sit when standing or walking just isn't going to be an option?

Keep your plague infested nasty self home! :-)

Yeah some kind of sitting option would still have to be there, even if just to give people a break (especially when starting out).

  • Eat right, exercise... still die.
  • i faint if i stand too long. I have to be very careful. How can i attend a moving meeting if i have to measure every spoon?

I foresee legitimate problems with this.
  • I can foresee just a couple problems with this.

First off, sweating after some hours of work(-out) then sitting down in a car, bus, or train afterwards, all steaming and hot... although there could be a shower on-premises and one can bring a change of clothes, similar to what is done when bicycling to work -- combining it even. Except when it is winter and -6 degrees C outside.

Then what about phone calls? something like:

    [Phone rings]
me: [takes it]: Hello (pufh pufh pufh pufh....)
    Other end [listens to

  • I used to have a standing desk at home [multiply.com], but I wasn't able to make it spine-friendly when used seated, and even I couldn't handle standing 100% of the time.

I'm already unable to do anything other than pace while talking on the phone, so that wouldn't be any change at all. I basically do laps around the apartment when on the phone at home, and will at least stand when on a long call at the office. This isn't intentional, it feels instinctual. And it drives my girlfriend batty. But I just can't help it.

    As for
  • I hate sitting all day.

Yeah having the option would be nice. It would be like when I was a kid, and there was a pullup bar in the den. Every once in awhile I would just go do pullups because it was there. Pretty soon I could do quite a few. Now I probably can't even do one :-|
