Ethelred Unraed's Journal: Multiply vs. /. 14

Journal by Ethelred Unraed

The JE title is deliberately misleading. ;-)

I'm not going to try and provoke a flamewar over the two sites -- if anything I'm thinking about how to link them.

A thought occurred to me. Since there are a number of people who have said they can't or won't make the move to Multiply, I could hack up an RSS feed reader to put their JE headlines on the group's central page over there. I already did that for the /. front page over there, and it works more or less; I could set up a fake user here to friend those who won't be coming along so the /my/amigos RSS feed would pipe in their JEs to the Multiply group's page.

A few people have contacted Multiply to get full RSS support over there, so my hack shouldn't be necessary after a while (hopefully). And for that matter maybe /. will at some point support RSS feeds from elsewhere, in which case the Multiply group's feed could show up here.

The point being that this could actually keep the group from splitting. Indeed it could actually make it potentially get huge -- as it is the level of activity on Multiply from those who've moved is pretty striking...

Whaddy'all say?

  • I've been leary of many of the "social" websites mainly because I don't trust anyone with data that I might consider valuable later. Will they suddenly own all the rights to it? Will they lose it and never retrieve it for me? Etc... However, I'm also really trying to look for new avenues to actually meeting/interacting and socializing with people of like minds. So, I'm having to admit that maybe this is the way to do it. Way back, I intended to write something of my own to put up my own blog and then

    2. Please don't aggregate my journal entries. I think that I'm going to pursue a function divide of my activities (as Sol appears to be doing), and I will post the appropriate things over there. I'm not sure that it will be workable in the long run, but it seems to be the best solution for trying to stay involved with the group.

    • With John on #2 above (not that I expect to do a lot of /. posting in the future). And with the fun guy's assumption below.

I rather think some of that activity is due to the very fact that it is NOT the dot, and the trolls are missing (not counting one of the admins of the refuge :-P). That and the fact that multiply pops entries that have new replies to the top of the que, so you have an indication of activity in a thread.

      As for #1, see Em's JE [slashdot.org].
      • Moi? A troll?

        Cheers,

      • agreed, i'd like exemption from aggregation, and don't intend to have my posts on both sites. I'm peeking at conversations on multiply now and again, but it makes it a lot easier to separate the stuff i value and the stuff i don't. Hint: Most of it, i don't read.

After a certain level- 40 people? it all becomes noise.

        • I read that "level- 40" and was thinking "soon".
          WoW :-)
          • I pitched a fit the other day when the "bookworm" word game I was playing didn't accept "crit" as a real word.

To his eternal credit, Blinder didn't laugh out loud until I also tried, "murloc."

Does this mean that Multiply is an environment which is better at facilitating social interactions, or is it an indication that the sort of people who are interested and willing to move represent that subset of the /. population that most interested in socializing?

If the former, then linking /. and Multiply would increase the interactions by drawing the two populations together. If the latter, then linking back to /. to get an au
  • Main page articles are main course...
    Journals are dessert.

And I rarely read comments in either.

'Sides my multiply is not at all associated with RWS...where's the fun in that? :D
