Journal GeckoFood's Journal: [music] iPod could use a reset button... 5

This afternoon I had a problem with my iPod. I had just downloaded some goodies from iTunes and decided to load them onto the magic box, and the rat bastard decided to freeze. Hard. It did not respond to any kind of input, and the screen was frozen to dim but not off. I could not get it to reset for anything.

Thinking I would have to let it die, I mentioned it to my boss, who did some strange things with the slider on top and the radial button. He had it going again in about 15 seconds. I still have no clue what he did to reset it, but it worked.

It would have been very nice if Apple had thought to put an actual reset button on there... :-/

[music] iPod could use a reset button...

  • so that's why itunes sales are plummeting.... i'm glad we got that sorted out.
  • My firend's iPod was making the sort of sound that a HD makes when it eats itself. She was not too technically oriented so when she took it to the Apple Store and they said, "It's supposed to do that," she believed them. Then we convinced her to take it back tell the manager that it was dying and sure enough she had a new one!

I think the lack of a reset button is some sort of marketing strategy. A reset button, after all, implies that it might need to be reset;-)

  • Flip the lock to on, then off, then press and hold the middle button and menu button simultaneously. After like 3 seconds you'll get a non-backlit apple picture on the screen. You ipod is rebooting.

A quick google 'ipod reset' will give you the explanation I just gave...
  • I did the same thing. A student brought in his iPod to charge over USB, but it froze. The lab tech who looked at it couldn't figure it out, so he brought it over to me.

I tried pressing each button, twirling the wheel, etc. Nothing worked. So I told him to leave it to me. I set it down next to me and idly mashed the buttons. After a few seconds of this, it started working again.

The tech asked me how I got it working, and I told him, "I've got magic fingers."
  • It's on Apple's support pages on their website. Basic DIY troubleshooting shit to try to keep people from calling them. Try www.aple.com/support -- the iPod tips are right at the top.

    Merry Christmas. :-)
