Journal Gizzmonic's Journal: Keep Brak.Slashdot.org separate! 3

Brak.slashdot.org is the test server for Slashdot's upcoming switch. In order to see how well it would stand up to a heavy load, they gave everyone 30 mod points (good on brak only) and the ability to post at +2 to everyone, regardless of karma. Then they posted a bunch of garbage stories like "How can I tell if a question that I want to ask is redunant?" or "Can I use this test to pimp my site?"

Results: humor! Everyone used and abused the hell out of their mod points. Normal slashdot users and trolls alike were funnier than normal. I normally have to turn my threshhold to -1 to really get laughs, but not in this case.

My suggestion to slashteam: if you really want people to subscribe, offer this "playground Slashdot" as a premium service. I know I'd dispense with the five bucks toot-sweet for the fun I've had today. What does everyone else think?

Keep Brak.Slashdot.org separate!

  • most people would get bored of it after one night. Theres only so much entertainment to be had out of modding a whole discussion down as flamebait.
    • Yes it would get boring if it was permanent. But it would work if it was once in a while.

Maybe it would be better if the normal Slashdot gave everyone 30 moderator points on April 1st.

After all, that's when /. gets boring

    • If they just gave maybe 5 or 10 points to every subscriber, it wouldn't be so bad. And some of the stories weren't all that bad. I'm downloading one of the violin guys mp3s right now.
