Most Linux users have heard of the popular Ubuntu Linux distribution and many know how stable the OS is on desktop computers. But for the growing Linux laptop user segment, how well does the latest version of Ubuntu recognize specialized laptop hardware and perform on their portable device? Today I'm taking a look at Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft on Open Addict's DELL XPS M170 test laptop.

  • Anyone tried it with a Pentium D, got both cores working without too much grief? I am having all manner of grief but no luck with Dapper at the moment - there are some issues well documented on the forums but the main workaround hasn't worked for me yet [sudo dpkg -configure -a], next up is to try suo depmod. Then flicking boot parameters [ht=on], then ? If Edgy works I may just skip Dapper, but I was hoping for a longer support time after my last uypgrade hell.
