Journal FortKnox's Journal: Podcasts 35

Its finally happened... I know I was the last person in the world to have one, but I finally got my hands on an ipod (the reason I got it I'll explain on Thursday... but I have to give a huge 'thanks' to my brother for the gift).

Anyway, I need to get up on all the podcasts that are good and popular. So far I'm subscribed to the 3 top "Lost" podcasts, the Dane Cook podcast, and the "Java Posse" podcasts. What podcasts do you listen to??

  • ... I need suggestions, too. I'm a bit of a Luddite when it comes to tech (really!) I have a 60 GB iPod Photo and it's loaded with MP3s but no pics or podcasts. I do have a bunch of MP3s of Winston Churchill's speeches but that hardly counts as a podcast. :)

    • In case you forgot you wanted to keep up. Got lots of replies, so I figured if I replied to you, it'll show up in your message queue and you'll be reminded to check again...
  • For sciencey stuff, you can't go past Quirks and Quarks [cbc.ca].

Music podcasts I listen to are Accident Hash [accidenthash.com] and Coverville [coverville.com].

For geeky tech news there is only Geekbrief.tv [podshow.com].

For all your ninja needs you can't go past Ask A Ninja [askaninja.com].

And who could forget the girls at French Maid TV [frenchmaidtv.com]? ;^)

And last, but not least: Strong Bad Emails [homestarrunner.com].

And no, I'm not keeping up with it. Still, it's nice to be able to order pork fried rice.
  • but in my commuting days I was hooked on a few podcasts, now I only listen while I go running so nowhere near as much as my 2+ hours of daily commuting.
I think the CBC's Quirks and Quarks is probably the best science podcast out there. Scientific America's is a bit dull in comparison.
I caught This Week in Tech (the screensavers people) last week where they explained why Google would never buy YouTube and called the Wall Street Journal morons for reporting the rumor. The Daily GizWhiz with Leo Laporte and Di

      i don't have one either.

i don't even have a portable digitual music player at all unless you count the old aiwa portable CD player i use as my car's CD player.
      • I don't have an iPod either... Well, I do have a iPod Shuffle (original gumstick form factor) but frankly: I don't use it. For me it is a glorified memory stick and I use it as such. (I actually bought it because of the memory stick form factor!) So no podcasts for sharkie anyway

I bought my wife a 2G iPod Nano for her birthday last June. With nice egraving, etc.... She has used it exactly one day, even though I passed that whole day ripping all her CDs. Stupid eh? That was the most wasteful present

Am I missing something? What's a podcast, and why would it need an ipod? I thought it was just a digital audio file (or possibly stream) floating on the net. What's ipod specific about it? Can they not be played on a normal PC? Or even on another portable audio device?

For those not keeping up, in today's episode, Tet explains that he hasn't yet drunk the Steve Jobs kool-aid, which is why he's not up to date with all of the cool kids. So

          • I personally still have absolutely no idea what a podcast is. It seems to be usually some Quicktime file, but I do not know. Sometimes it's a video, but it can be audio. Yes, you can watch it on any PC/Mac/Whatever that supports the coded. Frankly, I still have no incentive to listen what people have to say. I prefer reading it, when I really *do* have to care.

It is not as if there is something wrong with text, IMHO.

pretty much just an episodic audio or video file with an RSS feed to alert the audience to new installments.

i actually do listen to the they might be giants podcast, but i do it on my pc using opera to download it and winamp to listen to it. it's mostly music. sometimes i check in to the brainwashed.com podcast, which is also music.
          • Its the next-gen blog. Seriously. Usually a nerdy guy just talking about stuff. Some are interesting ("Java Posse" is ultra-techie-java guys talking about new java technologies... stuff like that), and some are just people reading fromt heir blogs...

Yes, I get that bit. But what does it have to do with the ipod?

  • I know I was the last person in the world to have one

Nope. I don't have an iPod.

I only recently got a cell phone. I don't like it, so I leave it off.

What the hell are you doing on slashdot?!?! ;)
I'm not a big 'music' guy, but I do enjoy listening to podcasts in the car. The radio stations in Cincy are pretty lame, especially the morning shows...
      • no ipod here either. Don't really want one. Only reason I have a cellphone is because fiance gave me one (I didn't want it). Only he and my parents have the number, because I don't want people calling me.

      • What the hell are you doing on slashdot?!?! ;)
Hey, I *do* run a custom Linux kernel with the memory allocation and copying routines rewritten in assembly, you know....

The radio stations in Cincy are pretty lame, especially the morning shows...

My radio is set to 89.7 Power FM, a donation run Christian Rock stations. They play some good stuff, and it's a pretty good mix of a lot of different bands. The DFW area stations SUCK. Especially in the morning. 93.3 The Bone used to be a good station, playing

"The radio stations in Cincy are pretty lame, especially the morning shows..."

I think that's a universal across America. The formula is 2 to 3 people in the studio who do nothing but tell 13-year-old locker room jokes, play lots of commercials, and then maybe MAYBE you'll get three songs in the hour.

What I want in the morning is a single DJ who is just as pissed as I am that he/she has to be up this early, doesn't tell any jokes, and plays more music.

There used to be a station in Oxford (97X, WOXY)

I was starting to wonder about your lifestyle before I realised that "pissed" has an entirely different meaning on that side of the pond...

          • by rk ( 6314 ) *

Heh, sorry for the US-centric language. On the other hand, the UK meaning has a bit of merit for getting through the morning, too. :-)

One of my favorites is the word table when used as a verb. My understanding is that in the UK to "table" an issue means "bring it to the table" because it warrants attention. We "table" something in the sense of "drop it on the table" because it doesn't warrant attention, but with an implication that does need attention at some point, just not now.

    • I only recently got a cell phone. I don't like it, so I leave it off.

TL's head asplode! BTW, FK, I listen to the Onion's Podcast and Z100 Phonetaps.

      • The only reason I even got a cell phone is because we got a package deal on two phones and my wife really wanted me to have one while she was pregnant. Since she gave birth, it now never leaves my briefcase and gets turned on maybe once a week to check voice mail from wrong numbers...

Seriously though, I hate the thing. If I thought I could pulverize it with my sledge hammer and avoid the wrath of the missus - the thing would be in thousands of little pieces by now.
        • Do you kill puppies too? Cell phones have FEELINGS!
          • Telling me my cell phone has feelings just makes me want to use a pick-axe on it before I smash it with a sledgehammer.

But since my wife would get upset with me, I can't. So it shall remain buried in my briefcase, unused and unwanted.
            • You know they have shelters that will find your neglected phone a family that will love and care for it, right? You don't have to have it put down. Thing of the happiness it could bring a young boy or girl!
  • As an audiophile and a technology/web lover, on the surface it would seem like I would be a perfect match for podcasts. But 99% of them are drivel, some guy reading his blog. I'm sure there are some nice ones out there, maybe I need to rediscover podcasts.

Speaking of Dane Cook, can anyone explain the attraction? I love comedy for the most part, but I can't say I find him terribly funny. He seems to be pretty popular, at least from the HBO stuff I catch occasionally.

NPR: Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me [npr.org] is an amusing take on the previous week's news. There are probably more goodies there, but I find I don't have much time or patience to sit and listen to most podcasts....

  • I have been listening to my former church at college [christkirk.com] pastored by Douglas Wilson and a church planted in Seattle [marshillchurch.org] by Mark Driscoll, a pastor that was taught in college by Wilson. The Seattle Church, Mars Hill, is about as tech savvy as any church; pod casting sermons (invluding Video pod casts), lectures on popular movies, etc. Very informational and good solid teaching to boot. Also, the pastor is funny and a great public speaker. Listen to Mark to get solid contemporary lessons and the basics conplete w
  • Though I have to say the one time I tried burning On the Media to CD for my car it didn't work ....

But I occasionally listen to stuff on my computer. Casts I like: Previously mentioned 43 Folders (organizational stuff, Getting Things Done/GTD), WXRT's Goin' to the Show and Lin's Bin (the first is "the regular guy" doing movie reviews in a harsh Chi-car-go accent; the accent is annoying, but the reviews are pretty straightforward regular person stuff instead of the heady "it makes me think of cinima verite
