Journal Pancho Pistolas's Journal: Finders...? 6

You find a wallet with a FAT wad of cash in it. What do you do? What if it was just a plain envelope with cash in it, crisp clean 100's? What if it was just a $100 bill? What if it was just a $20 bill? A $1 bill?

Now, suppose and of the above were yours, and you lost it. What would expectation of any given person to do in each of those situations?

  • I found a $100 dollar bill with my Grandpa at a Home Depot parking lot once. It looked to have been there for awhile. Since there was a large migrant worker populace about we conjectured that it was probably the salary of a migrant worker (since they typically got paid in cash). Taking the money into HD didn't seem like an option because, frankly, the employees didn't seemt hat trustworthy and it seemed unlikely that they would actually give the money back even if it was reported as missing. So, we had
  • Once when struggling through college, I walked into the payment office where there were several teller windows, much like a bank. The place was basically empty - there was only one teller working, and I was the only one on the other side of the glass. As I walked up to pay my tuition bill, I noticed $80 cash on the counter next to the teller window. Obviously a previous customer had left it there.

I paid my bill, pocketed the cash without a word, and walked out.

  • A couple days ago, I found $10 while walking down the street. I had actually just passed that way before, and hadn't noticed the money. I went into the hallway of the house and offered it to the family there, since I had just seen a girl enter that house. I don't know if it was theirs. I don't even know if it belonged to the girl who had just gone in. But I knew it wasn't mine.

In another situation, where I have no idea how long the money has been there, nor who to ask about its owner, I would probably

A wallet any size, with or without cash, I would check for ID. If there was ID, I would endeavour to contact the owner and return the wallet and all its contents. If no ID, I'd hand it in to the local police station.

A plain envelope? If it was outside, or near a bank, I would go inside and check if any customers had made any large withdrawals. OOtherwise off to the local police station and hand it in dutifully. It is an offense to keep money or goods found, so by not reporting the find you risk a serious fi
