idiotnot's Journal: New Toy

After messing around with two old machines at my friend's house....trying to get a system to work that'll justify the continued payment of the cable modem bill while he's away....I bit the bullet and built a new machine.

The specs:

- Cheesy generic case
- Asus Mobo
- Athlon 1700+
- 512MB DDR
- Radeon VE (salvaged from other machine...it's only about eight months old)
- DEC Tulip-based network card (so it sucks, oh well)
- SB 16 PCI (see the comment on the last one)

I tried out the Progeny installer for Debian after the boot floppies I had decided not to work. For whatever reason, the minimal ISO's I've been able to find still track "testing" and not "stable" for woody. One of the base packages in "testing" last night was corrupt....so no install. Tried the Progeny, and it worked okay.

It's not as slick as RedHat or Mandrake. Okay, I expect that. But due to a botching of the network configuration, the machine was seriously fsck'd until I fixed it via dpkg.

Oh well. It's fast now.
