Journal Frisky070802's Journal: Dave Patterson: "Stop Whining About Outsourcing!" 2

(Rejected posting. I thought this one would make it!)

Dave Patterson, President of the ACM, has the "Curmudgeon" piece in the 11/05 issue of ACM Queue, which has finally made it into their online edition. It starts with "I'm sick of hearing all the whining about how outsourcing is going to migrate all IT jobs to the country with the lowest wages" and continues from there to say that actually IT jobs in the US are growing and "Despite the rumors, the facts say that IT outsourcing is not the job-sucking vampire that everyone has been whining about." He accuses people of fear-mongering. Is he right?

Dave Patterson: "Stop Whining About Outsourcing!"

  • Yes, he's right - it's fear mongering. However, no, because outsourcing - is a threat that lowers EVERYONE's wages. I can pick up at least 20 jobs in IT that I couldn't five years ago, but none of them pay but a small portion of my current salary. That's to say, outsourcing has lowered wages. Is this fair? Define fair. It's free-market.

    • Good point. From a personal standpoint, the prospect of depressed IT salaries sucks. From a more altruistic standpoint, I see some benefit to leveling the playing field. If so much of the rest of the world weren't relatively impoverished compared to the US and other "rich" countries, perhaps we wouldn't be having so many problems with political unrest.
