  • The last bit is evidently the R.A. and Dec of some object, and the preceding its perhaps its catalog designator. Are there any hoops to jump through to get an explanation?

    • Yes, you are correct.

      No hoops. My first journal entry [slashdot.org] explains what HCG50a is.

      I had an astronomical observing to observe all 100 Hickson compact groups (of galaxies). But HCG 50 was just not possible in my 18", so one night, I borrowed the services of a 30", and three of us observed it.
