An anonymous reader writes "Students launched a fierce rebuff to the the UK government's plans to make them one of the first groups in the UK to receive ID cards in 2010. In a major PR backfire the site MyLifeMyID.org, launched to promote the cards by the government, is stuffed full of scathing comments comparing the scheme to totalitarian tactics used by the former East German Stasi secret police, expressing fear the government or criminals will abuse the data and calling for the project to be cancelled."
