math
An anonymous reader writes "Alexander Grothendieck was perhaps the greatest mathematician of the 20th century, and he just turned 80 years old. But no parties were held, no conferences in his honor, not even a birthday candle was lit. Grothendieck spent his birthday in self-imposed isolation, his rages discouraging even his most determined visitors. Grothendieck is far from forgotten, though, and his work has transformed mathematics in much the way the Internet has transformed communication: Once you're used to it, you can't imagine what life was like before it."
