superglaze (ZDNet UK) writes "The mobile platform company UIQ has filed for bankruptcy. After the formation of the Symbian Foundation back in June, there was no longer much point in UIQ, seeing as its technology was being folded into the new, open source and royalty-free Symbian. Motorola, which along with Sony Ericsson owned UIQ, was the last customer, and it dropped the platform in November. Now the game is truly over for UIQ.
I just got off the phone with erstwhile CEO Johan Sandberg, and he told me that Sony Ericsson has continued to fund UIQ for a couple months so the employees could find new work, but time has now run out:
"There is not likely to be a buyer, although that's up to the bankruptcy receiver, who has now taken over management of the company," Sandberg said... "Many people have already found new positions, but there are still 230 people here. Some of them already have new jobs lined up, and there has been a lot of activity looking for jobs, and lots of companies interviewing our staff. But, of course, it's been Christmas and it's a pretty slow industry right now, so it's taking time for people to get new jobs."" Link to Original Source
