An anonymous reader writes "Complex systems are cool and snazzy and have gotten lots of attention, but no one seems to agree on just what they are. Lots of different phenomena seem to fall under that rubric, for a variety of reasons. One scientist says he has a way to pull together all the different strands. A complex system, he says, one with an inner conflict. Conflicting tendencies built into the system won't let the tendencies settle into a steady state, leaving it in perpetual "dynamical frustration.""
