*sigh* I wish IBM would write a Linux driver for that 8" floppy drive... They have time to develop 340MB Compact Flash sized hard drives, but can't find the time to contribute a Linux driver for their 8" floppy. Interpretation for the sarcasm impaired: Write it yerself!

Connectix Emulator SDK by Anonymous Coward on Thursday February 04, @10:33PM |
Now we just need an SDK for the emulator so we can write and release PSX compatible games without Sony's licensing restrictions! This is what theyre worried about. Piracy is the least of their problems now. Hell, someone should port Linux to PSX :) although the 2MB RAM might be a limitation.

This is very significant (Score:1) by Anonymous Coward on Thursday February 04, @11:36PM |
In the console wars, the old rule was that software sold the hardware. Now, many more titles make their way to both the PSX and the N64 (not to mention Windoze) than in the days of the Genesis-SNES, and Capcom and other biggies are already working on ports and new devlopment for Dreamcast. My bottom lines are,I don't care who makes the console, and I'd much rather have a computer and solid emulator than something hooked to my TV. Is this the end of the console approaching? What if Connetix added good support for Internet (over a Bell Gigantic Infospeed DSL no less, I suppose, that story still makes me sick, a good example of a stupidity deadlock)/network/modem play of games that support that PSX link cable thing? What if it wasn't just for macs? No wonder Sony wants an injunction. Sony won't roll over and die, though, they'll use whatever techical and legal means they think will work, I think. Maybe we non-mac-os-people need a Console-Like Operating SystEm (acronym works?) first, that (PSX) console emulators could be built on top of, and additionally "native" games could be developed for. That PSX Yaroze thing is kinda neat, but I don't have the coin to drop on one, and it appears they're rationing the things.

VGS and UltraHLE... (Score:1) by Anonymous Coward on Thursday February 04, @11:38PM |
are apples and oranges. VGS was produced by Connectix, which is a reputable company with a solid history and operates out in the open, and has a hell of a lot to lose for doing stupid things like not using proper clean-room techniques. They have also acted in good faith to implement similar copy protection routines as Sony's. (and beefed it up in v1.1.) UltraHLE is one of those 'mysterious' releases, put out by some anonymous guys who went into hiding hours after its release. (Which IMHO was staged.) Almost instantly after its release, it spawned thousands of N64 ROM file beggars. Not that I'm attacking UltraHLE--it's just that you can't seriously compare its development to VGS's development.
