Build Your Robot Online
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/07/16/2030222
An anonymous reader writes "Ever needed a custom part for a robot, case mod or hardware hack but lacked the tools or a machineshop to make one for you? Ever needed a custom circuit board? Well, PC Magazine's Bill Machrone writes about a few websites, Emachineshop and Pad2Pad, where you use their free software to design, price, and order anything you can design with the software. This is more useful to slashdotters than 3D 'printing' technologies like rapid prototyping since you get real working parts. It looks like they support a number of machines and fabrication techniques beyond traditional machining, like plastic injection molding and waterjet. As Machrone says, this is empowering stuff. This is something that should ignite a creative spark to all you hardware tinkerers out there in Slashdot land."michaelhardware2004-07-16T23:48:00+00:00have-it-your-wayarticles6767,64,50,29,12,4,3That's Sir Tim to You

andrew_j_w writes "British born creator of the web Tim Berners-Lee has finally received his Knighthood from the Queen. It's nice to a pioneer, who certainly not a household name, get such a high honour from the establishment. Hopefully more people will now recognise the great work he did!"michaelannounce2004-07-16T21:41:00+00:00peer-to-peer-networkingarticles174174,165,117,83,33,24,17TMBG on DRM

scootr1 writes "John and John from They Might Be Giants speak to Newsweek about, amongst other things, digital rights management. My favorite exchange? 'How would you eat, then?' 'That’s my problem.' When are record companies going to realize that DRM isn't going to help them sell more of the bad music that dominates the airwaves?"michaelmusic2004-07-16T18:28:00+00:00they-might-be-assaulted-by-the-boston-stranglerarticles407407,396,313,231,77,46,28Why Offshore When Canada's Next Door?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/07/16/1336214
Roblimo writes "A study by accounting and consulting giant PriceWaterhouseCoopers claims Canada could lose up to 75,000 IT jobs by 2010 to offshore outsourcing, but could also *gain* 165,000 jobs through U.S. outsourcing contracts. The trick is, according to this story at IT Manager's Journal, that while Indian, Chinese, and Russian programmers may cost 80% less than U.S. programmers, the time zone, language, legal, and other problems involved with sending work half way around the world can eat up much of the labor savings, while Canadian programmers are nearby, speak English with nearly American accents, have a similar culture and legal system, and get paid 40% less than U.S. programmers. Might be time to think about moving North, eh?"michaelbiz2004-07-16T15:09:00+00:00beer-hockey-and-offshore-programmersarticles10141014,998,764,482,114,52,37Cringely: Wi-Fi in the Sky

clandestine writes "It appears that our lovable search engine has again expanded its horizons - the internet wasn't enough; now you can search and organize your own pictures. I don't know about you, but I use Google for nearly everything; heck, I found links about their acquisition of Picasa through Google News! Any slashdotters going to benefit from this tech, or already do? And yes, the addition of Picasa to their arsenal is a couple of days old, but they just started linking them on the homepage today."michaelgoogle2004-07-16T12:51:00+00:00google-does-something-news-at-tenarticles339339,327,258,155,59,36,30Fiat Joins Microsoft in a Wireless Partnership

bizpile writes "The AP is reporting that Microsoft and Fiat have gotten together to develop a system of wireless communications into Fiat's vehicles. The goal of the alliance, announced Thursday, is to create a flexible, easy-to-use telematics system (think OnStar from General Motors) for Fiat and its Lancia and Alfa Romeo brands sold in Europe, the companies said."CowboyNealmicrosoft2004-07-16T11:51:00+00:00hacked-cars-make-good-wardriversarticles215215,202,162,100,27,17,9Oxford Students Hack University Network
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/07/16/021200
An anonymous reader writes "Both The Guardian and BBC News are carrying the story that two students at the University of Oxford, Patrick Foster and Roger Waite, were able to easily hack into the university's internal network in minutes using only easily-available software. Once inside, they could find out anyone's email password, observe instant messenger conversations and control parts of the university's CCTV system. The students were investigating the university's network security for the student newspaper, The Oxford Student, which published a front page article and editorial on the matter. In the article, a university spokesperson is quoted as saying 'In some cases the wish to provide the widest possible computer access as cheaply as possible may mean deciding to go for a cheaper set-up, with potentially lower security.' The students now face disciplinary precedings from the university and could receive rustication (suspension) and a 500 pound fine. The matter has also been passed onto the police."CowboyNealsecurity2004-07-16T04:35:00+00:00unintentional-online-servicesarticles638638,629,510,331,119,81,64Dual Channel Memory Shootout
