56K modems that work with Linux?

Pathway asks "I am in the modem market, and I want a v.90 modem. I also would like to save a few bucks. Are there any good modems out there that work well with linux? Any that I should avoid? Thankx." On a similar note, James Dietrich wrote in to ask this question: "I installed Debian Linux on a computer with a Diamond SupraMax 56i Voice PCI modem, and was unable to get the modem to be recognized. A search of the Debian mailing-list archives seems to reveal a disagreement as to whether this one will work or not. Can anyone tell me if this modem is usable with Linux, and if so, how they were successful in setting it up? Sounds like several of you are having problems with 56k support in Linux. Anyone out there with some suggestions?
