In Search of Knowledge on Tandberg ErgoStations? 5

Crizp asks: "I've recently got hold of a Tandberg ErgoStation 15cX, a rather nice little monitor with a built-in "PC" X terminal. It's fan-and-disk-less, so I want to use it as a terminal in my living room, accessing the Linux server for Internet browsing and stuff. I'm quite lost, as I can't find information about this anywhere on the web. So I turn to the huge Slashdot user base, and humbly ask if anyone of you have any information about it. I've also created a website with the info I've found so far, and the 'take a look inside' procedure. It's located here."

  • You're right, the terminal requires a special image to be downloaded from a tftp server.

Some guy pointed me to the FTP site at the University in Oslo, which had a couple of these images for download.

Big thanks to everyone who replied, and visited the slow dual-ISDN website :)
  • I noticed your terminal has a AUI port on the back, just pick up a tranciever on ebay, don't bother with the BNC, i got 5 aui trancievers for $20 on ebay

I give these tips to just about everyone looking for info on X-Terms or anything terminal related...And they can usually be applied to almost anything else you could ever think of by finding a different newsgroup:

Well first there's the standard google search...sometime helpful sometimes not.
But what i've found to be the most useful for finding info about old terminals is the usenet group comp.terminals
And last of all (not related to your machine) anyone with an old HP x-terminal might have a look at http://www.ductape.net/~brianm/xterm/ this is where i found the software for my HP 700/RX.

Anyway, sorry i couldn't be of more help. Good luck!

  • I was afraid we were going to not have a weekly 'I found an ancient X-Terminal now tell me how to use it' article.

    Just made my week.

Looks like you slashdotted yourself. I think that could be a first.

    (Somewhat on topic):

If it is an X-terminal, what's the holdup? Isn't there a coax/twinax/rj45 port on the back? That, some sort of 'Ctrl-Esc' or something to get into the configuration menu, and this HOWTO [linuxdoc.org] and maybe this HOWTO [linuxdoc.org] and this HOWTO [linuxdoc.org] might offer some info. I'm sure that if you went out and actually bought or glommed on to an X Terminal, you might have a clue, but others reading this /. might not.

  • Some (i'm not sure about the one in question) are more complex than that. For example, I have one, a NCD made device, that requires a specially tailored kernel to be downloaded to it via tftp to make it work. And, as you can imagine, finding the software to make special kernels for 10 year-old X-Terms ain't an easy task.
