Looking at this poster's copious responses to his detractors, it's obvious he's a delusional, socially maladjusted nut. However, he's very right.

It is even humorous when he considers stupid those who say something along the lines of "They're just having a good time." He is also close to right then.

However, he's dealing on the assumption of very simple emotions and purely rational acting, both of which are rarely the case except in such extreme individuals such as stallman and gates. Also, as one ceo said, "Control your destiny; otherwise someone else will." Welcome to the real world, where you are given a chance to change things, in more ways than writing a barely effectual letter.

    Cool
  • The gurgling of a large bong awoke me that morning. I opened my eyes to find out where I was only to find myself face to face with a mostly empty can of cheap beer on CowboyNeal's kitchen floor. As I started to remember vague details of the previous night of wanton substance abuse, finding the exact circumstances of how I ended up passed out drooling on CowboyNeal's floor became less important and I decided to track down that bong for some marijuana to ease my hangover. I finally found CowboyNeal sitting cross legged in front of his computer hunched over his large glass bong and a sizable bag of finely grown dank nuggets sitting next to his mouse. "It's rollin'," CowboyNeal informed me in a raspy voice as he was holding his hit in. He added a large plume of skunky smoke to the haze that lingered around his collection of empty bottles of cheap brandy from last night neatly lined up on top of the general mess that is CowboyNeal's desk as I hit from his bong. "DAMN THIS SHIT!" CowboyNeal whined while highlighting a block of syntax errors that appeared to be from init scripts grepped out of his logs. "I should have kept some sort of diffs from last night. It was working before, and now I can't find what I changed." he said as I passed him back the bong. "RedHat is such a piece of junk," I told him while I gestured at a swath of Eterms each with pico (gross) editing various broken files littered about his /etc directory. I told him he should really be using vi as he cleared the chamber. CowboyNeal blew out another large cloud of ganja and chased the smoke out with words in ryhme. "I'm too high for vi." I told him I understood where he was coming from, and we spent the rest of the afternoon caching bowls on the bong while listening to his strange mix of Doors, Velvet Underground, and Beatles all archived in mp3 before I left. I couldn't help but chuckle about how much a post about the events of this day would be moderated down as I walked home.
  • Not as bad as this one [thepope.org].

  • This one was more lucid than some outings. Amazing!
  • Dragon Half is worth watching for the closing song
alone. Just listening to it isn't enough, you have
to see the closing credits. And if you like Dragon
Half, look around for a copy of The Ultimate
Teacher. Trust me on this one.

Also of note is Golden Boy: Wandering Student.
Pure dumb fun, but not for kids. Study, life is
    study... :)

    >Neon Genesis Evangelion -- yes, they talked about
    >it, I just thought I would voice my argeement. A
    >great series, though the ending is best seen
    >while high :)
Methinks that's exactly how "End of Evangelion"
was *made*. :) But still, a very odd show. A
must-see for mecha fans and philosphy fans alike.
And what mecha... sigh. It'd be nice to trade in
my Volkswagen Golf for a nice, shiny new Unit One.
Get the DVDs, though, if you can. There's been
some concern over the physical quality of the VHS
tapes. I've never had any problems with my copies,
but some of my friends have. Besides, the DVDs are
    cheaper.

Offtopic, but it's nice to see North American
anime companies switching over to DVD in droves.
Not only is the picture and sound quality better,
    but they're cheaper.
  • Anyone out there other than me remeber the Underground RPG? "It's 2021, and the dream is dead"

  • If you are looking for tech commentary, social commentary, and a shitload of wonderful humor, check mbrl [analog2digital.net] and its weblog by creon [analog2digital.net] and rhino [arrr.net] - sooooo amusing, I bust a gut every time. But yeah for geeks in space!
  • it produces a weird phasing effect that's annoying as hell. i have to cut 6k and above just to make it bearable. 56kps would be nice.
  • Hi,
Firstly, the show is great - I've listen to every single one (including the interim updates) since geeks1. On the other hand, this show needs a few corrections. I've sent a copy of this to the /. team.

    === QUOTE ===

    Hi,
    Some corrections for you:

You mention Xing mp3 encoder - have you tried the quality that lame
    offers?

(I own the Xing encoder but think lame is much better - I also have the
    Fr. bladeenc, etc. etc.).

N.B. Technically (legally) you should pay Fraunhoffer (I can never spell
that name) for each copy of geeks downloaded IIRC...

MP3s don't sound like "shit" if you have cool software/hardware.

Don't quote me but I believe that when you log into Napster you actually
log in to one of many servers hence there are more users online than you
think - they say that they located the 300,000 odd users in a single
    weekend or something.

    Rob Incorrectly talks about DeCSS:

You can copy a DVD bit by bit without DeCSS (most DVD-Rs and RWs
actually have the apropos lead in area pre written to stop them from
working in conventional playing drives - although there are ways around
    this).

At 20:45 index Rob starts talking about "ripping from DVDs" and how they
are "essentially perfect copies" and how you could "ram it through some
sort of MPEG compression" - DVDs use MPEG2 (an improvement on MPEG1) and
thus are already encoded using a lossy compression codec - it just
happens to be much better and slightly bigger than MPEG1.

DVDs aren't perfect by any means.

    MP3 isn't "50 to 1 compression" more like 10:1.

Netscape is no longer under a "commercial use" restriction - for Rob's
benefit, this was lifted several years ago

Can Rob Foresee the end of the universe? :)

Sorry to sound like whining, but that DVD bit was just plain wrong -
cool show though. I liked the "no disassemble Potter 5"...

Can you detail the IRQ conflicts between your graphics cards and HDDs?
The Graphics card will normally default to IRQ 10/11 and the HDD to
14/15 so I'm not quite sure what could be causing your troubles.

We're working on the ASCII porn - when we have our LUG meeting later
today, a couple of us will co-ordinate on that one. What kind of
orientation of pr0n is Kurt into? The meeting's actually on Firewalls
but /. often enters the pub discussion afterwards...

    Jonathan.

    === END ===

    Jonathan.
  • When I heard the "NO DISASSEMBLE JOHNNY 5!" take-off, I simply could not stop laughing.

Which begs the question: When are those Hollywood fatcats going to complete the Short Circuit trilogy?
  • Dude, the reason you're getting laughed off the stage is for saying things like "Malda has a massive influence in Open Source" and "his followers blindly, uncritically accept his every word". Gross overstatement is a recipe for disaster in rhetoric. If you want to be an effective speaker, you need to pick up on that.

In this specific case, it's worse than usual. Malda almost never offers editorial opinions. Mostly he offers them on Geeks in Space, where they're offered 1) on demand, and 2) mildly, to say the least. Malda is not a demagogue, plain and simple. He's a personality, mostly for entertainment purposes.

Anyway, your analysis is appreciated, but you're really making a mountain out of a molehill. That's the reason so many people are dismissing you out of hand.

    MJP
  • I just read the link in the parent. Sure wish all
the "Taco sells out", "Downhill since ...", "Old news",
"Doesn't belong on /.", etc. etc. posters
    could read this. Oh, well.
  • our high school had tv instead of radio. As a music geek, I didn't care, so I got a show on the local college station. I played the most depressing stuff I could find (the show was at 3am sunday mornings). Oddly enough, I got more calls per hour than any other show on the air. Mostly the novelty; no one else in central new york listened to that crap.

alot of fun though. I often miss it.
  • Yeah, but we (The Yarists) didn't have a radio station. So we did the world's worst "tape tree". We made tapes full of stupid humor and bullsh*t, made copies on cheap Rite-Aid C-60's and left them in the school bathrooms at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. It went o.k., but most of the tapes where smashed up by the local jocks. Oh well, another waste of youth.

    O.k., time for the plug:

I still have the original tapes, and i'm putting them up as low bit-rate mp3s at:

    www.wam.umd.edu/~sydb/yarpage.html

Or you can use the address in my sig., which is the same damn address as above. Hopefully someone will find this somewhat amusing.

  • They talked about the quality of encoders, what encoder do they use? I'm guessing the FreakinHover one (or whatever the german name is), I think they can afford it. :)

Ever notice that some encoders can't do low bit-rate mp3s?

  • Whoa! I used to have this one printed out on green and white fan-fold and hung on the door at my dorm, along with parts of the file legalhighs.txt

  • In the section on MP3s there are complaints made about losseyness (such a word ?). I'd just like to point out we already accepted lossey with the CD. A digital representation of an analogue signal is inherrently a poor (lossey) representation of reality. Ask any vinyl fiend.

We never complain too much about the quality of JPG graphics (also lossey)
  • All the episodes of GIS* now total ove 100MB (102MB to be exact)

*Not including the interviews with Malda and Bates

    Mark Duell
  • Well, after listening to you guys for 30 minutes or so, I totally realized why the show it isn't called "Cool Guys in Space." Regardless, you guys are cool. :p
I, myself, being a geek (I'm actually an in the closet geek: my freinds to this day still wonder why I can type so quickly and why my computer is always better than their parent's brand new one) find comfort in knowing that while I am alone socially in my love for computers, I'm totally not alone in general for my love for computers, the internet and open source.

Thanks guys, keep up the good work and dont let the people who bitch all the time get you down. :)
  • As it goes for Ham radio satellites, they get about 14-15 minutes of passtime to communicate with things like AX.25 (packet radio) and FM transmissions on satellites like AO-27 and others. To ping all the ports on overpassing satellites with 1200-9600 baud modems is kinda hard to do. Good luck on taking it down.
  • It's a troll in the most classic sense of the word. He's posting something that is obviously twisted and silly and he's trying to see how many people will take him seriously and respond.
    That makes him a troll.

I'd write more but I've got to finish washing Rob's car. (while drinking Pepsi.)
  • Heh, on a related topic anyone read today's (Monday's) Dr. Fun?
    [unc.edu]
  • Please get back on you medication
and sell you gun collection now.

Mao had a Cult, Malda not!

  • Geeks in space is just one part of the geek community. Maybe the slashdot crew could help in the setting up of a live 24/7 online radio station. Geeks in space would have its 1/2 a day on it, and just about any one who wants to contribute.

Any one could send in a mp3 of around 30 min, people who wish to moderate can go threw them and vote for the ones they like so we don't have trolls on the air.

The last problem is those double a people who don't like us broadcasting there music on the net. I don't think the slashdot crew would like to get mixed up with that stuff.

  • Ack maybe I should use that little preview button before I hit submit.

    s/2 a day/2 an hour/

  • How about:
    Ultima 9.

I had quite a lot of trouble geetting the game to work. It is the most buggiest game I have ever played in my life. It crashes ocasionally for no reason whatsoever. I have downloaded so many versions of my GeForce drivers, as well as game and OS patches, and FINALLY found a combination that worked (mostly).

To add to this, the game needs about 800Meg free HD and 128 Meg ram (and my P3 450 is too slow). It does not seem to use my GeForce at all to boot.

Another example of a bad game is ofcourse Windows 98.
  • It bugs me to hear and read in Wired about the amount of flames that the various guys of Slashdot receive. If it was just Jon Katz, I could understand, but it seems all of them receive a large portion of flame mail. What they do is great for the community, if you read Slashdot regularly and for instance this article [wired.com]in Wired, you would know these guys are pretty sincere in what they are doing... So stop whining! :-)

  • kz45, sorry, but I was just using my +1 bonus (which I'm not going to use on this post since I don't feel it contributes much). I wasn't moderated up. I have to say I don't see how your post was redundant. Off-topic, maybe. But then again mine was too to a certain extent.
  • there's a mailing list that sends an e-mail out a few hours after the show's been posted at the The Sync Geeks In Space [thsync.com] page.
  • They could have this neat little tcp sat. in geosynchraness orbit and would not have to use the Deep Space Network (the thing that allows nasa to not lose contact with their sats).

  • Anyone thought of this:
Can Mentallica really proove that all those users were really shareing Mentallica files? Did they really download at least one file per user?

    Here's a fun script. I call it FuckMetallica.cgi :

    #!/bin/bash
    dd count=1 bs=1024 if=/dev/zero of=dummy.mp3
    man pppd > pppd.txt
    cat pppd.txt | awk '{print "cp dummy.mp3 \"Metallica_-_" $1 "_" $2 ".mp3\""}' > Random_Names.cgi
    chmod u+x Random_Names.cgi
    ./Random_Names.cgi

You'll get som errors, but I'm at work and don't have time to fix it... :) Still it works. When it's done: Share the files and wait for Mentallica's lawyers.

    Thank you.

Ahem, if you read it closely you might notice that it says "Many thanks to Clifton Broumand of Man&Machine for graciously providing this review _unit_.".
I'd say there's a "slight" difference between giving a unit and giving a review...
  • A quick question before I begin:
Is there something wrong with my Slashdot homepage configuration or have the last few Geeks In Space episodes not been advertised on Slashdot's front page? I had to go directly to the "radio" section to see them. Hey, Rob, Hemos, et al... What's up with that?

Now, let me start by thanking the Slashdot admins for allowing us to download Geeks in Space in an open format like MP3. We can each create our own personal Geeks in Space library, and if TheSync disappears or removes Geeks in Space from its repertoire of shows, we'll still be able to find and listen to older episodes. Furthermore, due to the use of an open format like MP3, we're sure to be able to play them even ten years from now. Thanks, guys.

With that said, does anyone here watch the JenniShow or any of the other shows at TheSync? Does it bother you a little that the only way to watch or listen to the other shows is by streaming them? I noticed that some of the more recent episodes of the JenniShow are available for download, but the older ones aren't. Even if you aren't a pack rat like me who archives loads of MP3s and videos, there are other reasons to want to download them. For example, you might have bandwidth problems. At home, I have a crappy old 33.6 kilobaud connection. I can stream audio, but not very good audio. Streaming video through my connection is like watching TV through a cloudy sheet of ice -- that's how bad the picture is. Of course, the stream is often prone to breaking up or experiencing "net congestion." I do have access to a fast connection -- at work. I work at an ISP where I have a T1 connection, but I have to share it with all my coworkers and the sites we host, so the connection speed isn't always super-fast. And besides, I go to work to do work, not watch the JenniShow.

There are other reasons for wanting to download these shows -- as I pointed out earlier, TheSync may go under and take all the episodes of these shows with them, or it might simply decide, "There are too many episodes in this show's archive. It's taking up too much of our disk space. We'll have to delete some."

I know there is a utility for Windows 95/NT called "X-FileGet" by 2B System which can download RealVideo/RealAudio streams (through the "pnm://" protocol), but it doesn't work with the RealMedia G2 servers (which are very common these days) and 2B System seems to have disappeared. I don't know of any Linux or Macintosh equivalent. (For anyone interested, you can pick it up at Tucows. It's shareware.)

Now, I know there are plenty of reasons in favour of streaming. Not everyone wants to wait for a giant, multimegabyte file to finish downloading before listening to or watching it. And for the casual listener/viewer, streaming is just perfect. However, as I've pointed out above, if you really like a certain show, it can be annoying to always have to be connected to watch or listen to it. It would be nice if many of the other shows offered downloads in addition to streaming.

Any comment, folks? I know this is a problem for some people. When Slashdot announced that episodes of StarBlazers were being offered for free by Studio NEXT, one reader had the same gripe I did. Thankfully, another reader was able to give us a URL to download them. Good thing, too -- after watching just one episode, my brother and I were hooked. I'm going to download all 12episodes and burn them onto a CD. It would suck if we could only watch a blurry, postage-stamp-size image that paused and jerked a lot, prevented people from calling the house (re: dial-up), and caused extra network traffic for Studio NEXT.

By the way, thanks again, Rob, for allowing open-format downloads!

  • wow..that's interesting..I thought speech was supposed to be free here. What I posted, against slashdot, got 0 redundant. What medicthree, defending slashdot, posted got a 2. As anyone can see, Ignorance is Bliss.
  • if you notice, the founders of slashdot don't REALLY express their opinions on many of the subjects in the news. They report them, and claim they're for open-source and free-speech, but the truth of the matter is: They want to make money on EVERYONE. That's all it is about, and the sheepdotters can't see through it. It's almost like scientology (in a sense). They started a gathering for an upcoming religious following (slashdot for the free-software movement. Many linux zealouts follow the OSS/free-software movement almost like a religion). Then they make a profit, by any means possible.(slashot (now a corporation) has advertisers which bring in $$$.)

If slashot was REALLY for the free-software movement, they would have no corporation, and also wouldn't be profiting off of all the open-source zealouts. If it's alright for them to make a profit, why can't companies like mp3.com have ads in a linux bootup? (their take on this included commenting such things out). I thing we should comment all slashdot advertising out, but that would mean the end of slashdot...hmmm....maybe we need capitalism after all.....

but, since slashdot is jesus, and stallman is god, things that make either of them any kind of $$$ is justified.

  • The Metalica vs. Napster lawsuit is so pointless (esp. banning the 300,000+ users) the only real explanation for it is Marketing. Honestly, I haven't thought about Metalica for years. Now, I think about them every time I log into slashdot. Am I alone in wanting to pick up a Metalica CD? I understand Metalica wanting to bury Napster (pointless). I understand them getting their names plastered everywhere -- subsequently boosting sales. I really want a Metalica CD now. Damn. The new marketing -- sue somebody who pisses you off, alienate a small demographic and sell a ton of records. Kudos to Metalica Management. Great job!! I do think that 300,000+ number is a bit inflated (for marketing purposes).

  • There are a couple of flaws in your logic. No wait, you simply set up straw men in place of actual logic. But here are the flaws nonetheless. Under communism, everything belongs to The People. And we all know by example that The People are the people running the government. You get no choice and you retain no rights over your work.

Now, for Open Source. To the best of my knowledge, no piece of software has been made Open Source without the consent and cooperation of the programmer(s) involved. Few people in the Open Source community insist that every program should be open sourced. What we fight for passionately is sufficient recognition for the quality of open source software that we can use it for our work. And every Open Source license I have seen is based on the premise that the author of the code can limit what it is used for. Most open source licenses grant users certain rights and prohibit any reuse or redistribution in a way that would deny those rights to anyone else.

There are a fair number of hard core libertarians in Open Source. I suspect both communists and libertarians are over-represented here. There is certainly some tension between the groups. But we seem to agree that people can largely be trusted with our software if we spell out our intensions formally through a license. How many lawyers are there out there enforcing open source licenses full time? How many bureaucrats dedicate their days to protecting the intellectual property of the open source movement?

Communism is merely one of the formal definitions of a theory of left-wing anarchy. Free Software is compatible with a lack of central authority. Thus, it is compatible with communist theory. It is also compatible with anarcho-capitalism. But, as has been amply demonstrated, it can thrive in any environment where no one has the power to seize it and deny others continued use of it.
  • Okay, you've seen Dragon Ball Z, you think its neat -- the pinicle of animation -- here are some others that you will enjoy:
    • Anything by Hiyao Miyazaki [sp?] -- ie Mononoke Hime or Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
    • Vampire Hunter D -- vampires in a distant future. It's fun, really.
    • Neon Genesis Evangelion -- yes, they talked about it, I just thought I would voice my argeement. A great series, though the ending is best seen while high :)
    • Any of the Gundams -- I think Cartoon Network is wrapping up Gundam Wing right now, but I don't have cable, so I don't know for sure.
    • Dragon Half -- This is a must see!
    • I suppose Akira and Ghost in the Shell ought also be included in a list of anime that one should see, they helped to popularize it in the US.
    • The whole Robotech/Macross saga. Sure, there hundreds of episodes, but GIANT MECHA! How can you say no?
I can't think of anything else right off, but there is a lot of great stuff out there and I always get rather disturbed when people talk of Drangon Ball Z, Pokemon, or Sailor Moon as great anime! These add something to the genre (I don't know what that is, but they must add something),but there is good anime out there that dwarfs these; ie shojo like Child's Toy or (god forbid you should ever see this) I'll Make it a Habit for cuteness; Kite or Black Lion for shear bloody violence; Nausicaa or EVA for philosophy.

Please people -- go out and see some really good anime. It will make your life worth living again!

  • If it's alright for them to make a profit, why can't companies like mp3.com have ads in a linux bootup?

First of all, if you go back and actually read the thread you're mentioning, you'll see that the vast majority of comments that are high-scoring are ones that basically are expressing ambivalence (and even acceptance) of the "advertising" in the boot sequence. Second, the issue at hand in that thread was very very different from Slashdot's situation. The whole idea of the linux kernel is that it's open, free, and to a certain extent anti-commercial. That is not the point of slashdot. The point of slashdot is not to be anti-commercial. Slashdot never claimed to be against advertising, whether it be on the site or elsewhere. Posting and article questioning the encroachment of advertising on something that was (or at least seemed to be) up to that point advertising-free is in no way hypocritical. So I don't think your analysis of that situation is even close to fair.

  • Who do you think best fits the job for producing Geeks in Space?

    1. CmdrTaco is doing a good job, let him continue.
    2. Hemos (and yes these two options are deliberately separate to provoke flamewars)
    3. JonKatz, the Geek Wannabe ;-)
    4. Natalie Portman, Slashdot's favorite actress
    5. OOG THE OPENSOURCE CAVEMAN
    6. Bill Gates. After all, he's been the center of countless geek debates on Slashdot recently, and some of his software is way out in space ...

It's clear enough what these "geeks" are trying to accomplish: They're attempting to foster a personality cult. Once they have your unquestioning "respect" (a.k.a. fawning obedience), they'll start superimposing their own self-interested agenda on the Open Source movement. This is worse than Stallman, because Stallman at least has principles. The Slashdot guys have no principles at all other than self-glorification. They'll do whatever it takes to inflate their egos and their wallets. You may not think they can do much damage, but wait until they have the kind of influence they want: You'll find that some of your favorite OSS projects are "out of favor"; their favored distro will get ten times the publicity and attention that it deserves.

We don't need this kind of centralization. Linus can be trusted with his power; Malda can't. It's that simple.

  • If you want to connect to a particular Napster (Or OpenNap) server - and you run windows - you could always try Napigator [napigator.com].

    1) Metallica now suing everyone who has ever played one of their CDs in a public place, ever, without paying royalties.

    2) US bombs Iraq--not because they were closing oil lines, because they wouldn't play nice and upload their MP3s.

    3) Sex has been renamed "Doin' the Napstah".

    4) College campuses attempt to ban public libraries, as since they freely loan and collect books without a hidden agenda they must be evil.

    5) In a desperate attempt to quiet the whole situation and appease the masses, the music industry announces that for the next 24 hours only, there will be a special "Buy 100, Get 1 Free!" sale on CDs made prior to 1985.

    6) All references to "The Force" are replaced by "The Napster" in the Holy Trilogy. <I>Use the Napster, Luke...</I>
  • There are more than one napster server, there seems to be like 100 or so. And they are not linked like irc servers.
I connected one of my computers to napster then the other, I connected to napster over 100 times trying to copy all my mp3's from one to the other and I think I was on a diffrent server every time because of diffrent people in the chatrooms. I never did find my other user.
That number of users you see is only whats connected to that server. Same goses for the number of gigs online.
Connect and reconnect a few times, watch the numbers go up and down for each server.
  • I hate to tell you this guys, but for those of you who think Open Source != Communism, you are sadly mistaken. You can continue to delude yourself but it doesn't make it any less true. People who want to "open source" hardware, ALL proprietary software, and now radio and probably TV and music? Why not just come out and say it? All property should be community property and everyone takes whatever they need from others.

Okay, everyone all together now: "All property should be community property and everyone takes whatever they need from others."

    There, feel better?

No, you're right, there's no such thing as the "excluded middle" in logic, so you must be right that anyone who doesn't argue for the most extreme forms of intellectual property (what I like to call "intellectual privilege", for a variety of reasons, e.g. the gov't takes it away after a fairly limited amount of time and places into the public domain -- kinda like how it treated Elian Gonzalez, heh ;-) must therefore be arguing for the most extreme forms of communism.

You want MS Office 2000? No prob, just download it. MS wants a copy of your latest program? No problem, they download it. Clinton wants the latest copy of Playboy? No problem, he breaks into a magazine shop and takes it. Want free Internet access? No problem, just crack passwords and dial up.

Let me get this straight. You're saying these things aren't happening now?? "According to Janet Reno and Clinton lawyer Bob Bennett, the magazine shop had been given more than enough time to liberate the latest issue of Playboy, so the use of force to obtain 10 copies of that issue for `important White House activities relating to a dire shortage of interns' was way past due, justifying the raid of the store by 50 BATFP agents." -- ABC News, 2000-07-09.

Communism doesn't do anything for people but use them as slaves for the sake of fattening the government and the people in power..

Gee, almost like how America's supposedly "compassionate" combination retirement-home, health-care-facility, and mental-ward otherwise referred to as "The Federal Government", post-FDR anyway? (Okay, you don't quite have to be among the elite ruling class in the USA to enjoy a top-flight lifestyle while you're forced to pay for the stupid, avoidable mistakes made by people you've never met by a government that has never really cared...but it sure helps to be friendly with that elite, if you don't want your stock valuations sued out from under you.)

i.e. look at the Soviet Union and Fidel Castro in Cuba. NOTHING good has ever come out of communism. NOTHING.

Oh, come on. What about hockey? Ballet? "Hot Cuban Chicks", as the wags put it? You think Russians and Cubans would naturally have come up with these things without the direct intervention of Marx, Lenin, Stalin, Castro, and the helpful influence of Mao, Pol Pot, etc.? Keep in mind most of the very best hockey players and ballet dancers would have been couch potatoes like me ("I coulda been a contendah!", says I) if it weren't for the prospect of becoming a mere statistic in the latest Communist-sponsored "mass re-education"....

    Remember that open source kiddies.

Remember that open source kiddies what? Did you run out of money before you could buy a verb or something?

This whole stupid movement will collapse like the ponzi scheme it is when people realize that they may want to get PAID to do the WORK that they HAVE done in case they some day want to retire without living in a complete [****]hole on a meager social security or welfare income.

Ah, but by the time we retire, our leaders will have Taken Over, the Great RMS will rule the world, and he will give each of us of the crumbs of his great wealth and power! Can't wait to run NASA [nasa.gov], the National Weather Service [noaa.gov], and The Weather Channel [weather.com], myself...or did you think I wrote GNU Fortran because I actually write in that hackforsaken language?? Hahahahahaha!!

Damn...it's now $5 [thepope.org] for an indulgence for listening to Geeks in Space. I wonder what I'm gonna have to give for posting to the forum?
At least it's not one of the deadly sins...

You know what Geeks in Space reminds me of?

My high school has a radio station, and if you're lucky enough, you can get a couple of hours each week for a few months to goof off on the air. Take any episode of Geeks in Space, take out the parts where they actually talk about news, and insert some music, and you've got exactly what these high school radio shows sounded like, complete with the occasional comment about how nobody's probably listening =)

I really like radio shows like these, just "everyday" people doing a radio show on what they think is important.

    I do have some suggestions:

Stop saying no one is listening; Maybe its true, but hell no need to remind the people who *are* listening.

Always keep the talking limit on; No more then two people should talk at the same time.

Thats all I can think of right now. Keep up the good work.

If you really want a really polished radio station like Geeks in Space then definatelly check out Does Humour Belong in Technology? [bccs.net]. Maybe Geeks in Space can take some pointers :)

You have to "jump" servers. If you are looking for something in particular you keep it in the search filed and Disconnect, Connect, Search. I've heard of something called "Napigator" that lets' you choose napster servers. The servers are also named things like "Metal" and so on. There's also a page on www.napster.com for unsigned bands to promote their music or you can also meet a lot of people offering their own music on the chat channels. The reason for me being unprecise is I'm at work and I don't have Napster installed here. At school though I have my Napster running and shareing.. :-)

BTW, have you heard "Dr Dre featuring Metallica - Money, money money (Abba cover).mp3"?... j/k .. ;-P

    Thank you.
